Decisions, Decisions
« on: Dec 26, 2005, 02:18:03 PM »
:help:  I just can't decide what axles I want to run. I have a d60 rear axle and can get a d60 front for cheap, but I can't decide wether or not to get the 60's and build them or just keep my built toy axles under my 4runner and run them. I want to step up a tire size to either 38.5/14.50/15 TSL sx's or 39.5/13.50/17 swamper irocs. The toy axle specs are, front 3 inch wider with ifs hub bodies, fj rotors, bellfields and stock inners. The rear is basicly stock except as with the front it is geared to 5.29. Should I just part these out and build to 60's or keep what I have? I drive this thing some and it is always going to be driven to the trails so I need something that is going to be fairly indestructible. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone  :dunno: This is bugging the hell out of me. One minute I want to ditch the toy stuff and run 60's the next I think I am better off with the toy stuff. :hammer:

Someday I will run ifs toy rear w/ spacer/adapter to 8-lug in rear for light weight and D60 up front.  I will run the bells, or smufs or something, but $700 into axles to me seems like you should just go 60 and stop worrying

Or maybe it is easier to convert 60 to 6 lug?  I don't know...I haven't started the research yet cause I am not to that point.  Much luck to ya!

Thanks for the input fellas. The more I think about it the 60's seem like the rational choice. I could spend a ton of money on the toy axles and still have the ring and pinion to contend with. What are yall's opinions on a 3/4 ton d44 front would it be up to the task of 38's with cromo axles and longs super joints. If the deal on the front 60 falls through this may be the rout I have to take. :gap:

All things being equal (money, availability, etc)
D60 vs Toy
I'd vote D60

D44 vs Toy
I'd vote Toy.  You already have the str. box...get some longs and Marlin hysteer and you are stronger and lighter than the D44, plus drop out 3rd.

What about ring and pinion breakage between toy and 44. The 44 ring gear is 7/8 bigger than the toy ring gear. I am not sure about the pinion gear sizes. With cromos and bobby's super joints you still think the toy is stronger? I honestly don't know. One other thing I was looking at is width, the 44 would be full width. I can also get a complete d44 for $200.00. I don't know. I just can't decide :wall: Hopefully the deal on the 60 won't fall through, but I haven't heard from the guy in a few days.

While Toy's are tough axles they do have limits I don't like.  Turning radius is bad, changing out broken birf's or inner axles is - well - lets just say I'd rather not do it anymore on the trail. The D44 has a wider stance compared to the Toy (Wider is better) and wheel spacers and or off set wheels put more strain on the Toy knuckles.
As for as staying all Toy - whatever

$$$ on the D44 Vs. D60?!? Do the D60 and don't look back The D44 is ok up to 36" tires - I wheel with guys pushing larger tires on D44's but they do break aftermarket HD components.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. I have made my decision. I am definatelly going full width with the d60 rear and either the d44 front or hopefully the d60 front, if the guy I know comes through. I figure if I have to go with the 44 at least my front suspension will already be set up for the 60 if the need arises :gap: but I have been doing research on the 3\4 ton 44 front and it seems that some people are having good luck with them holding up to 38 inch plus tires, built of course. I will be adding all the build info in my rig gallery thread so stay tuned.
