custom fabbed heater/coolant line
« on: Dec 06, 2005, 09:59:56 PM »
can i have a copper pipe in the cooling system replace a rubber hose?
i am going to connect it the the hard pipes already there with parts of the original hose
the reason i am making it out of copper fitting and soldering them together, is that i am sure a new preformed hose form the dealer will be $$$$$$$
will i need to ground the pipe via a wire to the body to prevent electroylisis or is it not an issue? if i will need to do it, i will get a clamp and clamp a thick guage wire to the outside of the pipe and ground it to a hole on the firewall

Yeah, you could. Which hose are you trying to replace? Hoses really aren't that expensive...

this hose

Go to NAPA and price it before you go to all that trouble. Remember that it's a rubber hose for a reason too. May be a flex point.

I just used 5/8 bulk hose for that.  But if you want, tomorrow I can get you Part# and price, I know what hose it is, and I stock it.

I replace that kind of stuff every 3 years, it isn't worth the risk to have a hose blow and mess up your day and maybe your engine too.

May be a flex point.

That was my first concern. Be mindful if it flexes at all.

About the electrolysis, don't most coolant formulas have protection against this?

to part 1: it flexes slightly every time you accelerate and the engine torques over.

Part 2: I was offering to do that tomorrow.

the way i am envisioning, it will still have hose to flex with my copper idea....

also...  i am adding metal to a system that already has poor electrolysis issues....
did you know that the head is actually supposed ot have its own ground or it may contribute to electrolysis? lce mentions this and so have several people and tech articels i have seen

Well I say if you do it your way and don't have the rubber hose, it'll be your headache down the road if it doesn't work and separates. Rubber hose is cheap and it doesn't have to be the formed hose that it came with originally, formed hose just makes it easy.

that formed hose needs to be formed, it comes pretty close to the exhuast and also runs the chance of being pinched by other things..... so that shape is a must... i will try napa though... i jsut really dont wnat to have to go to the dealer for a $50 heater hose.....

Have you actually got a price from the dealership yet?  I bought a smaller preformed hose that no-one had and it set me back a whopping 8 bucks.

Take hose down to Napa and have them visually match it up.  (assuming they don't have your application)  Might find something close that you can make work.

I'd have to agree, those hoses really aren't all that expensive, plus you'll have peace of mind.

Part # is 10789.  Normal walk in should be between 22.42 and 25.

  that be me man, look for my thread in general asking if people would be down for a dealer hookup.  You're already a couple steps ahead cause you have the part #, only problem is he might not check his email every day, and it should take a couple of days to ship.  It's worth a try atleast.

Ok, found it for you, http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=16415.0

strangely enough NOBODY ever had the right lower radiator hose for my truck.  everybody stocks the upper hose and the elbow that goes to the pipe, but nobody carries a 4x4 lower except for the dealer it seems.  the only ones i could find are the one that jim's looking for.  figures.

That's one of the perks of working at a parts store.  I can put anything in stock, so I keep pretty much anything I might ever need. :haha:
