1984 22R air pump questions

I've got a couple of questions about this air or smog pump that located under the intake and carb.  It kinda looks like an AC compressor but sits lower and back further on the engine.  Can this thing be taken off along with all the hoses associated with it?  Is that a Cali only option or was it on the federal engines as well?  My 85 truck with a 22R doesn't have one.

The pump is required in all states as far as I'm aware of, they were in Toys through 84 and I believe only in carbed trucks after. The EFI's don't require them.

The efi trucks don't use a pump, but still do have air injection.  See that small tube that goes from the air box over to the plastic ball by the throttle body?  This is the intake to the pulse air injection system.  It uses exhaust pulses at the manifold to create vacuum to open reed valves and inject air.  You will find the air management valve under the intake manifold.  I believe the later carbed trucks used pulse air as well.

If you remove the smog pump you will not be able to run a/c as they use the same belt.  You would also have to block off the ports in the exhaust manifold.  On my 84 I tapped them and installed bolts.  Also, I would recommend taping off disconnected connectors for the system, as they would then be hanging around down there, gathering dirt and mud, and can accumulate a suprising amount of battery corrosion too.

Also, if you are thinking of removing the air injection system to gain horsepower, just remember that the air pump only requires something like 2-3 hp.

i had an '84 with no air pump.  i think it was a california emissions thing by that year.

they're pretty easy to get rid of, unbolt it, remove the hoses, and block off the holes in the exhaust manifold.  i think one of the hoses routes to the air cleaner so you may want to cover that up to keep from sucking dirt in.
