Lift/Tires for '82 Long bed
« on: Nov 16, 2005, 12:02:53 PM »
I have a stock '82 Toyota pickup.  I have recently put a Badland bumpers winch tube of the front.  I am alos going to get a Warn 9000lb winch for it.  I have a new motor, tranny and rebuilt T-case.  I want a moderate lift to run a set of 33"-34" X 10.50  R16's on a set of 16X8 teflon's from Pro-Comp.  What lift do you reccomend for use as a Daily driver as well as trail use and mud use.  I actually prefer a stiff on-road ride with decent-good offroad flex.  The springs will also need to support the weight of the winch and also payload in the bed.  I sometimes haul engines, wood, steel, etc. so I need springs that will not fatigue fast.  Thanks for any info!

If you just want to run 33's I would do an "add a leaf" kit front and rear.  You will clear 33's it will make your suspension stiffer and will give you about 1 1/2"-2" of lift.

Trying to find a system that is stiff but still flexes well can be tricky.

Here is what I did on my 80, 84 & 85 which is almost exactly what you'd be looking for. Downey's 3" lift with their add-a-leafs. They will not recomend putting the add-a-leafs on the front but I did it anyways to support the heavier bumper and winch. I also put 1 1/2 inch shackles on which gave me about 4 1/2 inches of total lift after settling. Pretty straight forward swap without having to modify any mount points, and still gives the firm on-road ride, and is real flexy. Your steering wheel will be off center but if you also buy the adjustable draglink you can bring it back straight and it will also eliminate the bump-steer.

I had an 83 all stock with 305/16 exterrains and they cleared fine but I put on some 2" lift shackles up front to level it out better

I have decided to do the folllowing:
Front:
shackle lift + add-a-leaf (to handle the weight of the winch)
Rear: Shackle lift

I need to get a locker for the rear so I need to save the $$$$$$$

I plan on running a set of 33X9.50R15s   I have looked at the BFG All-terrains.  Anyone know of a slightly mor aggressive tire in the same size for a reasonable price?

I would suggest purchasing a synthetic winch rope to save a bunch of weight then get a Downy mild lift spring.

Aussie Locker in the rear should be a cost effective plan.

In the rear get a short block in combination with the shackle.

I'm stickin' to wire rope, lasts longer and won't get damaged dragging over rocks, and won't weaken sitting exposed to the sun. Proper care to wire rope and it will last forever.

I would do a low lift like 3"downey lift springs on all 4's and some 34x10.50 LTB's maybe a rear locker.

Thanks for the tips guys.  I just bought an '83 yota for $50.  It has roughly a 5" lift, axles, etc.  It has no Motor Tranny, T-case, but what the hell It only cost $50. I'l post the pics.  I might try to salvage the lift from my new project.

How durable are the TSL's?  The tires that I am specifically looking for are the 34X9.5R15s.  They will mount nicely on my set of Toyota Steel Rims.  I wheel in mud, snow, dirt, sand, rocks, and use the truck on the street, but it's no longer a daily driver.  How many miles should I expect with modest driving habits?

Heck you can put 34x10.50 LTB's on 15x6 rims they are skinny anyways.
Not much mileage out of swampers if you are expecting longevity I'd go with a different tire like a BFG..

with good driving habbit, keeping close tabs on air pressure and rotating them often you could probably milk 30,000 out of them maybey more if you have a spool or welded rear they will go down a lot quicker :beerchug:

Hey thanks.  ;)  I might get a set of the 34X9.5R15 TSLs when I get a lift.  I now have an '83 Volvo 40GLTi as a daily driver.  I just need to finish installing my new turbo for it.  I won't be putting as many miles on the truck after that, so 30,000 miles would last me for at least 3-4 years.

Sorry!  I do too.   I am using it for a builder axle for my '82.  Truck only needs drivetrain.  It had a chevy 400ci small block w/ 700R4 Tranny

What is the purpose/function of the spring on the front steering stabalizer?  It seems like to would make it difficult to turn in the direction that compresses the spring...and would try to force the truck the opposite way?

I have no idea, just bought the truck and haven't had time to take anything apart.  I'll do my best to figure it out.  I'll try to talk to the guy I bought it from.  It had a 400 small block in it and was most likely used only for mudding lookin at the tires

The whole interior of the truck is totally gutted.  Not much to use other than the fenders.  Just pulled he roll bar to sell to a neighbor for $25.  I planned on using some interior on my '82, but most of it is gone.

P.S. It is an SR5, but the trim piece is totally gone.  I'll post a pic of the interior soon, so you all can see.
