another starter problem
« on: Nov 04, 2005, 09:13:59 AM »
i have a 83 w/ stock 22r. Heres the problem, I replaced the starter because i kept having to tap it to start the truck. Well, now that the new one is in it doesnt want to start. When i turn the key i hear a loaud click, and when i release the key from the start position it clicks again. Just two click is all i get. One when i turn the key on and one when i release. Whats the deal? :dunno:  The battery is fine. Ive tryied two differnt ones one optima yellow top and another straight off the charger. Ive checked all the wires from the starter to the battery and then back. Has this happend to anyone else and how did you fix it?

sounds like a bad starter right out of the box.

the "cluck" is the drive moving in and out of the flywheel gear. if the contacts are no good it will not trun the start motor. or the motor itself is junk.
eather way take it back.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

ignition is good, this is one of the first things i tested.
Some times the motor does want to turn over though. about a half rotation. Then it "clucks"

like brainlessfool said, could be a bad starter right out of the box. I've wen't through 3 in one day until I got one that worked.

Buddy of mine was having a similiar problem on his 2nd gen, ended up just putting a push button in to start it and it solved all his probs.

sounds like a starter to me.  Take it back, get a different one, see what happens.

Your battery terminals tight and clean.  :dunno:
Mine does it all the time when I am in the mud, I have crappy cable ends that come loose all the time and it will click the same way.

Also if your starter ever mis-engages and grinds, you can re-engage it by putting it in gear and bumping it back and forth.

Stop buying sh@t at Kragens!!!   :gap:   :gap:

Hook a volt meter up to the battery.  Turn the ignition over, if it drops below ~10 you're battery is toast.  If it stays @ 12-13, you're starter is toast.   Course this assumes your wiring is ok.   :gap:

if the push button solved his problem then his ignition was toast

possibly but not neccesarly because he's got a 2nd gen Runner and they've got a few safety switchs under the dash that'll cause that problem if they go bad.

  Fixed it. It was a combination of three things, Both batteries were bad, positive and negitive wires to and from the batt. to the starter were bad and the starter was bad. the first thing i did was replace the starter, because i always had to tap it for it to work, still clucked, then i took both batteries to atozone for them to test, they were both bad. i put a new batt. in the truck and still, clucked. then i replaced the batt. cables and fired right up.  :beerchug: thanks again for the help fellas.
