« on: Nov 03, 2005, 05:59:16 PM »
:screwy:  Hey people, I was wondering what the cheapest locker I can get for my 1990 4 runner? Also I want to put 4.88 in my truck with 31's is that bad for the gears? :driving:    :shocking:

The cheapest locker is a lock right.
Or you could buy a welder and weld your rear end for the same price it would take to buy the Lock Right and have it installed.

Don't worry someone esle will elabortate for me. :gap:

a lunchbox locker is a basically drop in modification.....

i have seen the ez locker recently advertised through summit for pretty cheap.....

after that an aussie locker would be the next cheapest

The secound question I had was would it be bad to gear my 4runner to 4.88 and still be running 31x10.5 inch tires?

4.88 are too low for 31's.  That's not much bigger than stock.  Find a gear ratio chart and it will tell you what you might or not need.

4.88s are a bit low for 31's. I ran them with 31's for a while. then went to 33's. much better.

you can run 4.88s with 31's, just going to turn more going down the highway.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

just makes your engine run at a higher RPM,

Typical chart:

4.56's - 31"
4.88's - 33"
5.29's - 35" and so forth

You can run 4.88's with a 31" tire but its not gonna do you much good, just burn gas because your engine will be screaming. You should be fine with 4.56's and a 31" tire.

Is genuine gear a good brand for gears? Would you buy them yourself?

My truck has 4.37s and 31s and in 4th I'm at about 3500 rpm at 65 mph, can't imagine what rpm it would be with 4.88s!  If you use your truck mostly as a DD then I wouldn't go any lower than what I have, maybe 4.56, but the lower you go the worse your mileage will be too.  Maybe if you elaborate on what your goals and plans are we can give you a better response.

I want to put 33's on it, and I want good gas milage. but I also have no power what so ever. I thought if I gear it thoes iteams would get better. I cann't find a chip for it, and I have a k&n air filter for it too. What do you guys suggest?

Either you don't say or I don't see it, so I'm gonna assume you have a 22re.  If you're thinkin about runnin 33s I'd say 4.88s for sure, probably give you the best balance of power and mileage, anything lower is gonna drop your mileage.  Do you have just a k&n filter or the whole filtercharger setup.  I'd personally steer clear of the fipk setups and just do a drop in filter, fipk's really do nothing more than get dirty quicker and try suckin in water if you're puddle jumpin.  Open up your exhaust from the manifold back.  I can't see gettin a huge improvement from a header, but if you have the cash to throw around here's how I would do it: Good header like NWOR or LC engineering, 2.5" from header to new free flowing 2.5" cat and 2.5" from there to a good quality muffler like flowmaster or magnaflow.  Now if you have a v6 I'd say tie an anchor to it and drop it in the sea...

My :twocents: , I have an '89 P/U with a 3.0 and 33's.  I welded the front diff so I could have it locked when I want.  I call it my voice activated lincoln locker.  I just tell whoever is riding with me to lock 'er up.  It works great and have had no problems in doing this.  I think it cost $.50 in welding wire and new gear oil.

I was told not to weld it. I do want 33's on it, and I only have a drop in filter. I have 2" pipe from the cat back with a two chamber flowmaster. I think that I will go and put 4.88's in and hope for the best.

It's the EFI four cylinder engine.

Sure you run the risk of breaking something with a welded diff,  but you wanted to know the cheapest way.  I have been 'wheelin half a dozen times since I welded mine and have not had any problems.  When I removed the diff cover to do the job I discovered four cracked teeth on the ring gear and it still has not blown on me.

I've had 10 broken teeth in the back before, and it didn't miss a beat but it was way loud, and out of oil cause one of the teeth shot through the housing

i broke a ring and pinion before my welded rear just dont get the carrier to hot when your welding it or you run the risk of warping your carrier :beerchug:

bb11... just for kicks, what engine/tranny do you have?  And most importantly, what kind of wheelin' do you want to do, and what else besides wheelin' does the $runner need to do?

Anyway, if you're planning on going to 33s, the 4.88s ought to be just right.

check out grimm's ratio calcs.  Enter your specs and compare....
