Well, I just bought a 1980 Toy pickup with the idea of swapping in a diesel. I don't have much of a budget, and am looking for the simplest and most economical way to go about this. I have lots of experience working on trucks, but most of this is with FJ40's and old IH Scouts (80's and 800's). So I'm new to Toyota pickups, and trying to pick up on as much as I can about different part numbers, specs, etc.

What I have in mind is: 1. try to find a relatively cheap running domesticly available toyota diesel, probably a 3B or 2L. OR...
2. A junkyard near me has two SD-22's.. I can acquire one or both very cheaply.

Of course, I still have to go down and see if they work. My brother bought a 1980 Scout II with the SD-33 turbo in it, and unbeknownst to him, it had a shattered piston. (Oh.... thats why it was running so rough and smoking so much!) I know these engines are prone to piston failure, but the weak link in those Datsun pickups was always the crappy automotive tranny they backed the diesel up with.

So, I wanted to try and gather some advice on installing an SD-22 in my pickup. I've seen Willy Mammoth's build-up page and have a basic idea whats involved. But I don't really know the specifics of what bellhousing I need to use. Is there an issue with input shaft length? What starter and clutch/pressure plate should I use? In short, is it realistic to do this swap with a budget of $800 to $1000 or am I barking up the wrong tree? Would the 2L or 3b be a better bet? Would they match up with my tranny and bellhousing?

FYI-- the truck is a 1980 w/ 4" lift. The engine is a swapped in 21R (-U?) and has a blown headgasket and/or cracked cylinder head. I think the tranny and t-case are probably stock, but this truck has been modified a bit and was obviously owned by someone who offroaded (previous owner installed an interior 4 pt. rollcage and did the lift). I thought it was a 5 speed, but then I read somewhere that pre-82 (I think) all hi-luxes had 4 speeds. Is this a good tranny? With a diesel, I may sort of need a 5th gear. Obviously, 60 hp is not going to be blowing up many trannys. Then again, the datsun trannys all seem to blow up.
Thanks-

After thinking a bit and talking to Willy Mammoth, it seems the SD-22 is sort of borderline feasible for me right now, and realy wouldn't provide what I'm looking for. I would like this truck to be able to at least approach highway speeds. I'd settle for 60 mph, but 70 would be awful nice.
For anyone interested though, Willy Mammoth and I both seem to think that the SD-22 uses the same bellhousing as the SD-33 found in IH Scouts. Many times, a wide ratio t-19 (w/ 7:1 1st gear) can be found behind one of these. Could be a pretty nice setup for you rock-crawling guys if you were to run either a dana 300 or divorce mount your toyota t-case.

I noticed that the 1st gen pickups were also avaiable with the 2F engine. I seem to recall from my Landcruiser days that tthe 2F and 3B
diesels use the same bellhousing. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone know if the 1st gen pickups used a different bellhousing for the 20R and 2F. If it comes down to it, I could have my buddy take measurements of his Cruiser bellhousing and maybe a couple of pictures.

Seems like the 3B might be the way to go. Anyone have a line on one?

no pickups had the F or 2F engine, just cruisers.  it'd probably squish those poor little springs in the front, a 2F makes a big block chevy look light.

the few 1st gen trucks with diesels(never seen a 4x4 but they exist in other countries) had the L engine, while the 2nd gens got the 2L and 2L-T

Anybody know if any of the diesels had the starter on the same side as the 20/22R. I'm trying to do a more or less direct swap. Fabrication is an option. Buying rare bellhousings and adapters is probably not.
