94 toyota engine and tranny problems
« on: Oct 19, 2005, 03:50:16 PM »
Hi I have a 1994 toyota pickup with a 22RE and a w56-d tranny.  I recently rebuilt my motor because of a clatter noise that it had.  the motor has about 1600 miles on it and the noise is still there after the rebuild. for the rebuild I put a remanufactured crank in, new rod and main bearings, Pistons, piston rings, timming chain with steal guide, vaulve seals, 3 angle vaulve grind an aftermarket cam (more power).  I also replaced the oil pump. I cant seem to get rid of the problem. it only makes the noise when you give it gas and it is almost back to an idol.  then it makes a clatter noise, anyone ever heard of this problem before?  and for my tranny problem the other day I was driving home from work and my transmission started to whin,  it makes the whinning noise in every gear.  could it be a pocket bearing?  How hard is my tranny to rebuild?  any info will help.  Oh yeah my truck only has 149,000 miles so I shouldn't have any trouble with a toyota,  Kinda frustrating.

seems like every 22r/re has a diesaling sound to it at one point or another, my 91 had and my 94 had it, i through in a bottle of lucas oil with every oil change and took care of both of them. yours might be a different case but i would start with that.

as for the tranny i have no idea how to rebuild one, never had to. but it sounds like it could use a fluid change and through in some lucas or slick 50 or something like that.

if it's just at low RPMs more than likey it's just the chain, normal.

trans? maybe the input bearing.

have you adjusted the valves since you rebuilt the engine? valves can make alot of clattering noises, loud and quiet no matter what the RPM. if they're not adjusted right they WILL make noise. me and my roomate did a complete rebuild of his 22re and had to adjust the valves three times to get them just right. especially if the valves are new you'll have to adjust them, drive it for a while and then adjust them again while its still hot. if you just put a new chain on it that should'nt be making noise. i've replaced alot of chains and they don't clatter when they're new.

I guess i've never heard a timing chain rattle at low RPM :dunno: , valves will sometimes make a little bit of quiet noise, as long as it's not really loud they're probly OK, fuel injectors will make some ticking noise too
