1983 transfer case leaking!!!!!!!
« on: Oct 17, 2005, 09:24:51 AM »
I recently purchased a 1983 Toyota pickup. I love this thing, however while wheeling yesterday afternoon I noticed a strange smell. After returning home I noticed a puddle under the T-case. This thing is leaking badly. It looks like it is coming from the top of the case. Any suggestions on what it may be and or how to fix it. Also have a leak around the harmonic balancer and around the rear axle pinion. Other than that, this thing runs awesome. The harmonic balancer and the pinion don't bother me, I know I can fix them however the T-Case has caused a major concern. Please advise!

I dunno pull your driveshaft get a 32 MM socket loosen the flange nut remove the flange change the seal then reassmble.
A cordless snap on impact works great removing those steaked nuts.

rtv is you best friend :gap: . did you over fill the tacse and now it is leaking out the vent? remeber it is not ok for you to fill you tcase, tranny, or diffs to where fluid is running out. you want the fluid level with the bottom of the plug. the leak under the harmonic balancer is the front main. its cake walk

Does it have duel cases??  If so ... I had the same problem . What happen was when i was putting the cases back in bumped the rear seal . By doing that  it didn't seal good and overflowed out the top of the shifters. Maybe that can help you

if it is coming from the top of the case it could most deffinately be leaking from the shifter like yotaboy said, i've seen alot of them do that. easy fix, just take the shifter boot off inside the cab and unbolt the shifter and reseal!

I think you guys are correct, its leaking from the shifter however its not leaking below the bolts where the gasket is, its leaking around the transfer case shifter boot. Marlin sales the replacement boots however I am not sure how to install it onto the shifter without stretching the boot around the shifter. Is this going to cause it to leak again?

i've never had to replace that one before so i'm not sure if it stretches over the shifter or not. if it looks like it does'nt want to go over you might have to pull the shifter out to do it.
