dead spot??
« on: Oct 06, 2005, 05:13:32 AM »
lately the trucks been actin up weird. sometimes between gear shifts it gets a bad dead spot in the throttle, like in between 3rd and 4th gear, in normal shift from 2800-3000 rpm back down to around 2000 rpm it'll just dead spot itself. i figure its about the time the pressure in the manifold changes from low to high vacume  :dunno:  im clueless on what it might be. does this sound familiar to anyone? anyone have any suggestions of what to look for?

ive checked around and dont think i have a vacume leak anywhere, i did this check at night so need to do this again this morning once i get daylight. thanks....

whoa~ sorry, forgot to mention that.... :smack:  it was about 5am when i posted

its an 84 x-cab with a stock 22R. only things on it are a K&N, headers, and exhaust.

like i mentioned. its a weird dead spot between shifts. i can get a solid confirmation but it also has a cough to it when i barely touch the throttle too (as i cruise) but only in 3rd, 4th, and sometimes 5th. it does it when shifting from about 3000rpms back down to around 2000. my guess would be having something to do with the intake pressure change??  :dunno:  i dunno, its got me stumped at the moment. need something to go off of before going in blind.... imma check my chiltons right now if it'll tell me anything as well.

I had a similar problem years ago, It was a problem that started out like that and got worse over time, you would be cruising down the road and randomly the truck would sputter, in my case I ended up swapping out factory coil and ignition, and that fixed my problem. It was carburated.

hmm.... i may have to check that. although the problem is in between shifts only?? its weird, its as if it all of a sudden does not get enough fuel and coughs untill it regains more fuel delivery.

i would definantly look at the carbonator.  If you weren't i cali i would suggest a weber but i dont know the laws.  Also use some crab cleaner and spary short shots around the intake mounting the carb base and all the vacumn lines.  look at the varies things monuted on the firewall and fender for vacumn connections too.  Good luck to you.

he he he he, no smoggie on my truck, unless you count my two vaccuum lines for brake boost and dist, or the long since locked up smog pump, and all in the great state of california.  Guess it's all in where you live, or used to live.  Even talked to a chp about it and he said I was ok registerin out of the area cause it's considered my permanent address.  Breath deep little toyota, breeth deep!! :haha:  :haha:  :haha:
