4.88s or 5.29s

i want to know what should i get. I dont daily drive the truck i just wheel it. I have 35 toyos, a ppprrreeeeetttyyyyy much stock 22re, except with a free flow exhaust and a k&n filter charger kit, so what should it be 4.88s or 5.29s

With 35's 5.29's would make it about stock ratio, but I don't like how small the pinion is with the bigger tires so I'd go with 4.88's

well i think on 4 wheel parts .com they have the ratio chart and it says 4.88 or more stock then the 5.29s, they say the 5.29 or more for the more competive stuff or something

I wouldnt go by anything related with 4wheel parts. They just tell you what the computer says. Call Randy's ring and pinion.

4wp's would not be my choice for information either, 4.88's would be slightly high for 35's and 5.29's would be a little low.

we're runnin 5.29s with 40's...   still cruisin up hills in 3rd  on a 22r.   get 5.29s .. were bout stick *gasp* 5.71s into a buddies truck (same truck with 40's) to get a little more gearing

I have a feeling the same people that swear 5.29's are junk are the same ones who are busting knuckles and steering arms with hydro assist.  They take their lack of forethough to limit the ram's travel and blame the parts for the breakage. 

Im anythingbut shy about the stupid pedal and I have yet to break a gearset.  Just get quality and be done with it.

You could be right, I've heard it both ways and err on the side of caution and went with 4.88's on my 4Runner and 84 Truck, well and my 85 truck, um and my 86 extra-cab and of course still have my stock gears in my 80. I have seen that pinion and it is a little small and the ring is really big, so big that you must grind the notch to get it through. With the 4.88's you just need to spin it as you put it in the housing.

I didnt have any issues with getting mine into the housings.  Im funning a 79 front housing and 94 4 cyl rear.  Both of the diffs (front high pinion, rear 4 cyl) slipped right in.  The front did need to be turned a bit but I didnt grind anything at all.

I've driven a rig with 5.29s and 35s, a little low, but not bad.  I run 4.88s, but then again, I have 31s, also

Hah, nope Im runnign 5.29's in my junk.  I ran 4.88's in my 84 for awhile but I dont recall having any issues getting them in.

well what would u rather have for trail rig 4.88s of 5.29s cause i already have a daily friver 2wd yota so i dont need to worry about on road use

On every vehicle I put them in (4.88's) I had to spin the gear as I fed it in, and people that I've talked to that had 5.29's have said they needed to trim the ring notch on the housing to get them in. Maybe they didn't try to spin it in like you and I have done.

Id go with 5.29's if it'll ever see any road time.  Im running 38.5" sx's on mine and I drive it quit a bit onroad with no real acceleration issues.

Either one will be strong enough for what you want to do.  Personally Id put more worry into the brand of gear I run vs. which one is stronger.  Cheap gears are weak wether they are 5.29's or 3.90's.

Well of course 5.29's would be best in gearing and since I've never tried them only from what others told me before if someone like WHITE_TRASH has them on 38.5's with no issues I would even be inclinded to go with 'em on my truck.

I think that 4.88's and 35's are better then 5.29's.  I have 5.29's and 37's right now and like it.  but when i had 35's i thought it was a little low for the road.  Great for the trail.  But if i were to do it again i would go with 4.88's just because they are a little stronger.

I agree with WT, go with quality and you won't have a problem.
