22re cutting out
« on: Oct 02, 2005, 01:57:47 PM »
hello all i have a 1985 toyota 22re in my truck, while it is cold it will run mostly fine, a little more rich than normal though, but when it gets warm, it will start cutting out under load, you will be on the gas and it will die then about 1 second later it will come back then die. when not under load it will rev fine. also when its warm fuel will leak out of the canister on the passenger fender, out of the tube on the bottem, but when its cold it won't. also it is pulling code 11. which is switch signals i am stumpted thanks.

check the timing.  when i did my timing chain i didn't have my timing checked yet and it did pretty much the same thing.  standing still it would rev up fine but under load it would cut out but not quite die.  got it timed and it is good now.  at least you could start there.

First the #1 thing you want to do is either replace your purge canister or somehow drain it.

My friend's MR2 would not pass smog, and we worked and worked and worked at it, and finally found out that his purge canister was full of gas, maybe because he topped off his tank one too many times.

If there is gas in your canister, then it can easily be sucked into the engine and run it rich. When this rich mixture makes its way to your oxygen sensor, it will tell the ecu to lean out the mixture. But remember that the mixture is correct, but its just the added gas from the canister that is sending the wrong signal to the ecu.

If it is really rich then the ecu can very well pull plenty of fuel out and you would loose a lot of your power.

What happens if you keep your foot in it when it cuts out? If you keep the throttle WOT (wide open), then the manifold vacuum might be low enough as to not suck gas from the canister. Of course I recommend draining the fuel from there first, but you could try this to test the theory.

I think it was the timing. its a buddies truck and he live an hour from me, so I can only work on it during the weekends. I called him and told him to see what the timing was set at. he replied 22^ BTDC...LOL . We forgot to set the timing after we got it running... and after we got it out on its first run we noticed the problem.
Its one of those "I thought you set the timing......No I though YOU set the timing"....LOL

Glad you guys got it fixed, but I would still look into the purge canister. It is not supposed to be full of gasoline.

I remember when I built the motor on my '87 2wd 22re.  I got a couple of vaccum lines backwards and fuel started dumping out the charcoal canister on hot days, with or without it running.  If you've done some work to it recently, I would definately check the routing of your vaccum lines.  This also caused it to spit, sputter and die.
