I was at a local junkyard today and i found a 7MGE sitting on the ground it looked all there but a little rusty the guy didn't know if it ran but he said he would give it to me for 100 bucks. do you think this is a good deal or would it cost to much to wire it all up? what tranny would be the best one to use?

there she is....sorry bout the crappy quality....cell phone pic

Matty

is it worth it in non running condition, and if the wiring is incomplete what would that cost to redo?, and what would it cost to rebuild roughly....tried to find the other thread on it but i couldnt....any info appreciated

you need to tell me where that junk yard is  and then forget about that poor  useless engine :eyebrow:

the problem  with the 7MGE  was the head gasket,  but that can be fixed,  that pic looks like a cutoff,  if you have a truck with efi it would be soooo easy to hook that up

you'll want a R151 tranny  :yesnod:  and i THINK a R154 bellhousing :headscratch:  i think

the 7M's head gasket problem was mainly due to the head bolts being under-tightened.  besides that, it's a pretty solid engine.

and unfortunately there's no easy way of running an R151 behind one of these engines, the R154 had a different input shaft length so the bellhousing won't work with a 151

I can't believe you guys are discussing this, 4runnerrick has like a 20 page writup on swapping a 7mge into his 4runner.  It leaves pretty much no questions asked.  It is in the projects section of this web page and on page 6 or 7 of the toyota faq on pirate.

ouch.....i was asking if it was worth it in a non running state and his write up comes with complete wiring already.  he doesnt say what it would cost, and only after a short time didnt his motor go?......i was just trying to weigh this out.....just thought it was a good idea to hear some other peoples opinions too....i dont know a lot about em but i stumbled onto this one and i was already looking to do a 3rz but no way i find one for 100 bucks

Ramrod

In that right up it shows the new motors he is putting in that he is getting some work done to.  I bet it might still be cheaper to rebuild that motor and put it in than do a 3rz.

yea it would probably be a lot easier if it was an efi truck already the thing that I'm still wondering about is where to find a computer... it would be a lot easier if it was in a whole car

do you guys have any quick checks that we could do to see if the motor is in OK condition

Pull the valve covers and look for sludge, pull the water pump, pull the head if you have the time.  See what things look like behind the intake manifold.  Pull the spark plugs.  If you get some help, you could try to compression test it.

The easy setup is the 7mge with the 5m (older supra) motor mounts into an efi truck that had the 22re [bolts right up].  Use a 5mge bellhousing, clutch, etc. with a w56.  You'd need to locate a 7m manual tranny computer and harness.  I like to start with http://www.car-part.com to get a feel for prices, and shop around from there.

$100 is pretty cheap.  I understand the 7m computer only needs four wires to actually get the engine running.  Even with the cheap engine, I'd still plan on shelllin' out ~$1200 or more to complete the swap.

You might find some more information from folks that have done the swap here:  http://www.supracharged.com

Good luck, and let us know which way you decide to go.

anything easier to see if she works?? cause these people are pretty in-bread and crazy and they dont really know :pokinit:.....he was like 100 the way it is and theres no guarentees so i just.  i dont think he would like us pullin it apart there cause they are mad crazy.....is there anything real easy to do to check the beast....cause my 22R is crappin out on me and i think im ready for this beast

thanks for all the help

Could we do a compression test with it not actually starting like by using a wrench to turn it over?

That's how I roll

yea 2 grand isn't to bad at least we are getting the motor for cheap. I'm just nervous about wiring it up.

Now I read 4Rnrricks thread but I'm still a little unclear of what tranny and bellhousing I use. Is it a 5mge/7mge bellhousing to a w56. I have read taking half of the r151 bellhousing and welding it to the other half of a r154 bellhousing. I really like the r151f first gear at 4.31. i just would like to know the simplest tranny and bellhousing combo and no automatics. This motor has no bellhousing on it so we would have to find one. is there any way to bypass certain emissions controls and things like the o2 sensor when we wire it up or do they need to be hooked up for it to run?

I'm new to the whole computer controlled vehicles so i don't really know what you can do or can't do

Yea the 5peed Supra bellhousing and clutch parts including slave and starter. hooks right up to the W56.

When I did mine I got a car for $500. took all I needed out of it, including wireing harness. Got it running. blew the head gasket since I didn't have enough cooling with the stock radiator and pusher fans thru the AC. Head gasket kit from Toyota for around $250 and a new tock replacement radiator. and 1 pulling fan. Retourque head bolts to 72 Lbs. It ran good for a season till the rod started knocking.

Got a JDM from Jarco with warentee, new seals and gaskets $1400. Aluminum radiator and cut the core and rebuilt it around. Now it runs great after 2 seasons.

alright thank you but i still have another question how would I be able to bolt up the motor to a g52? Or is it not worth and just better to go with the w56
