marlin springs flex?
« on: Sep 13, 2005, 08:23:52 PM »
I have been researching different leaf springs for when I do my SAS on my 1990 4runner. I am planning on doing leaf all around and 35-37" tires. It will still be my daily driver so I need the springs to have good street manners. I will also be wheeling this rig pretty hard on the 'con and fordyce etc. I am looking for a spring that can flex really well and be suitable for the street. Everybody likes the marlin springs but I haven't seen any really good pics of them flexing. If anybody has some post them please! Or if you have any opinions on the springs of what I should do please tell us. Thanks
-Pat

Mine are great on the street (using bilsteins...makes a difference) and flex like a mad dog. They are still brand new and I'm super impressed. Don't know how long they will last. I have the $199 cheap ones so the new ones are supposed be better. We'll see.

Nice 4Runner, what size are those MTR's?  35's, 37's?  Are those Marlin's shock hoops as well?  What length Bilsteins are you running?

Thanks.

37's, Sky's shock hoops (Marlin was backordered when I did my major parts order) and 12" Bilsteins. I Should have gone with 14's. Yes, the springs flex that much.  :yikes:

Most of the parts used were Marlin or Sky. Both quality products and I'm really happy with the results.

What are you running in terms of rear springs, rear shocks, and length of the rear shocks?  Do you have any rubbing issues with the 37's?  Did you tub the firewall?  Did you need to do any trimming on the rear fender area?

Sorry for the 150 quesitons, I am just trying to get ready to order me up a trail flex kit and want to know what I need to do and expect once I start installing.  I plan on ordering the 14 Bilstiens for the front and 14's like /\ for the rear.

Used some Allpro old school rear spring (the alcan made ones) with AOR shackles. Scored a deal on them and they are VERY high quality spring..this is before Allpro switched from Alcan. The the length of the rear shocks are 12's also and positioned like /\. Used a Sky rear upper hoop and to compensate for the shorter shocks just moved it down to the factory bumpstops and boxed them in and welded it there. Works great.

No rubbing isses with the 37's but remember, these are MT/R's, they only measure 35 3/4" with 25 PSI on 8" wheels. Not true 37's like a Irok or Toyo measure out to be.

No firewall tubbing. The only trimming we did was a bit of the front fender near the bottem. took about a 1" off and did a little massaging with the hammer. On the rear fenders we took off about a 1" or so on the rear of the fender. Did it at a angle like \.

You would do good to go with 14" bilsteins but you will be doing more cutting than I did. We wanted to keep the body intact as much as possible and we did so by limiting the flex (uptravel) of the springs. This isn't a bad thing as you keep the springs from going negative they last ALOT longer in the long run. Mine go completely flat so they are setup correctly. I'm sure they will sag a bit and I'll have to trim my bumpstops a bit but for now...things look good. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. My steering turned out nice but I used a Dana axle so yours will be different if you use a Toy front axle.

any more? They don't have to be marlin's springs all around. Just front or back is fine too.

Nope, Allpro (old school Alcan built models) in the rear.

A few friends helped do the cage. Turned out nice.

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

Thanks guys. The back seat? Well....crawl through the back is the best and easiest way. I didn't build the cage with rear occupants in mind, more for my kids car seat and that's about it.

Little late reply, but I'd like to say that the 4" Marlin's are pretty cool.  Most of my pix are with 33's.  A handfull are with 36 Iroks...

No BODY lift; sledge hammer to firewall mod & trimmed fenders once 36's went on...

Posting these pix up to help sway those of you who are on the fence 'thinking' of buying Marlins.  Just DO IT!!!  I did.      :yesnod:

Various locations in Hawaii on the main island of Oahu...

Enjoy...
