Light Wiring Help!!!!!!
« on: Sep 09, 2005, 05:11:19 PM »
Ok I'm installing my rock lights and I need some help.  I've never done this before but it seems really basic.  Can anyone post up a diagram how I should wire em PLEASE! I was told battery to switch, switch to light :headscratch: is that right???  And would I put the fusable link between the battery and switch or between the switch and the light?

I'd search but I'm workin right now and don't have time :smack:

Thanks in advance

It dont matter where you put the fuse as long as its before the object that you are wiring in. Yes bat to switch, switch to lights. That should do it. Hope it works. What gauge wire are you using?

 Thanks guys.  I got em wired and haven't put the fuse in yet I just wanted to see if it'd work.  Turns out one of the lights don't work so I'll have to get another one and wire it in when I do the fuse... I even put some switches in my dash :hyper:

:psss: it's the first time I've deal with electrical :pokinit: so I'm surprised it worked first try

I went Bat >> Switch >> Light >> Light

Gonna add the fuse in between the batt and switch :wiggle: thanks again!!!!

Remember that like the old x-mas tree lights...if you wire something in series then if you lose the first light due to a bad bulb or something then out goes both or however many you have.

Ok :tantrum: I installed the fuse right next to the battery goin from the battery > fuse > switch.  Now the freekin light doesn't work.  I bought some new lights today to put in since that one doesn't work, figured I'd go with 2 new ones :psss: since they only sell em in pairs and not singles  :headshake:  SO hopefully tomorrow I'll get the new ones in stalled and we'll see what happens  :crossed:

I like to use relays on my lights.  Maybe the smaller wattage rock lights don't need them but my front 100W lights like the relay!

You got it, a relay is a must for durability and safety.  Battery, fuse, relay.  Switch to relay, lights to relay.
Mount relays where accessible and try and use all the same types for interchangeability.

More importantly, and the whole purpose for even using a relay, is to mount the relay as close to the lights and the main power supply as possible. If your battery is in your engine bay, and your lights are in the back, then it's almost useless to use a relay since you will still have a resistance issue with the lenghty wires.

In this case, Instead of dishing out $$ for the relay, get yourself some good 12 or 14 gauge wire for the power supply and grounds
