Clutch replacement...
« on: Sep 07, 2005, 10:21:03 AM »
How difficult is it to replace a clutch for my 22re? Is it worth my time to do it myself? I was looking at the ceramic clutches that Marlin has to offer, and I have heard good things about them, I need some input!  :psss:

takes about 2 hours... do you have a lift? all your need is a friend to help you get the tranny back in... there was a thread about using all threads that workd great the last time i did on...
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

Very simple.

Take your 4x4 wires loose from top of the t-case, take your speedo cable loose, unplug your backup *reverse* light wires that connect to the tranny. Take all the bolts loose from the bell housing and pull the starter loose, Slave cylinder comes loose and pulled out of the way.

I usually leave the crossmember attached for last and set the jack under the T-case while i loosen the crossmember, once it's all loose just pull back and it'll slip right now.

Sometimes they come out with ease sometimes its a PITA.

I suggest having atleast one more person with you, maybe two so one can hold the jack in place while your pull the tranny back.

Hope this helps

Exactly what i did.  I think it is the easiest way to do it.  The whole project isn't hard at all.  Make sure you red locktite the clutch bolts in and torque them to the proper torque.

Ok that sounds simple enough, what clutch do you guys think would be better? The ceramic or the conventional marlin one? Oh and By The Way Shamb that is a sweet 4runner!

I've got a Marlin clutch kit.. its basically just a Japanese aftermarket.. nothing spectacular but it does the job so i'd go with it if you didn't have the cash to drop on a centerforce

Thats true... I have been known to do some odd stuff though... At my job I repair cell phones... And one time I couldnt figure out why this phone wasnt turning on after I had taken it apart and cleaned and serviced the phone... Well I took off the back cover and I realized that there was no battery because the battery fell onto the floor :)

It is always the little things that we overlook, that is why it is good to have a second guy around when working on your rig...so you can blame it on him... :gap:

Depending on how far you have to slide the tranny back, you may have to remove the shifters?

Also, I always like to support the engine to keep it from tipping when I'm wrestling around with the tranny.  I've only done these by myself, so it can be done.  It's not pretty, but it works.  Ya get under the jacked up vehicle on a creeper or a rug or something with your head toward the rear.  Roll the tranny up on yer chest, then lift the bellhousing up with yer knees and slide it on in.

I had an '85 cressida that lost everything but 4th gear.  I did the tranny/clutch swap in my gravel parking lot at my apartment in February.   :qtip: It took me pretty much 8 hours, but it has ran great ever since.  Also did a 5m to 6mge swap on that car, but thats another story

i have almost 20,000 miles on my marlin 1200,  when i reinstalled it a few weeks ago it still looked better than any aftermarket clutch,

centerforce clutches are fine for cars,  or turbo 's that need more clamping at speed,  but are junk for a 4x4 cause they need rpm's to clamp more than a stock clutch,  the toyota stock clutch has 850 pounds clamping pressure,  marlins 1200 or 1600  NON ceramic is the best way to go,   when i get my celica going i'll probably go with the 1600 ceramic,  ceramics arent good in my opinion for a 4x4 because you NEED  a certain amount of slippage at take off,

also  if you remove the tcase first  you can handle the tranny without a jack,   tcase weighs more than trannys by far
