so i read a write up about doing a vented rotor swap here...   http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173918

but when I got it all put back togather, I can't get the snap ring back in the freewheel hub body on the end of the outer axle shaft.  After trying many a time trying to get the snap ring in there, and than finaly realizing that i can't even see the trench for it, I threw my hammer!   Than i got out the caliper and started measuring.  Where the rotorr bolts to the hub (where the 6 holes are) the original non-vented is .289 thick, and on the vented it is .324.

THAN AND ONLY THAN do i recall looking at this page when I was looking for rotors!  http://www.marlincrawler.com/brake.html

where it clearly states that the rotors ONLY fit 82-85 solid axles!  am I screwed  ???

:help:

TIA

Might try the IFS style axle keepers.  Large washer and a bolt in the end of the birf.
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

ok, I am VERY STUPID!  and was very tired at the time of the post!   There isn't anything touching the back of the rotor! so that means it can't be it!

but than why does marlin say that the rotors don't work on a 79?

so what you are saying is:  Get a realy big washer, than thread and tightten a bolt in the end of the outter shaft, and pull the axle twords me??? ???

if i do understand you right, does anyone know what size bolt threads into the end of the outer shaft?

gnob

the early 79-80 wheel hub used six bolts and the wheel studs
the 81-85 use two bolts and the wheel studs
that is the difference.
normally if the birf isnt to the end of the lockout, get a bolt , screw it into the end of the birf and pull on it to show the snapring groove.
hold this. . .

sweet!  I think I am just gunna mark and drill new holes for the rotors.

THANKS!!!

i think you can get an earlier model('79 or 80 down i think) land cruiser rotor and it'll work on the early axles.

The rotors on my truck now are from a 78 fj-40 and they were a direct bolt on for my 84 but I had to drill the new bolt pattern to use them with ifs hubs.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
