When installing gears in a dana 60 or 70 does it matter what carrier is in the axle when going to a lower gear ratio like 5.89 ?  :help: Thanks

I think it does matter. I think there is a split from one ratio and up for one type of carrier, then another for lower ones.
There is an excelent dana fact sheet on the pirate board that should answer for sure.

YES! It does. you need a carrier out of an axle that has a 4.56 or numerically higher(i.e. 4.88, 5.29, 5.86 etc). I have heard that you can get thicker ring gears to make up for the gap, I do not know this to be fact.
That's how I roll

Thanks fellas, I was thinking it did but just wasn't shure. I have a ff d70 sittin at the house and plan to get a 60 to build to go in my runner one of these days. I looked on pirate but really couldn't come up with any good info.
