27 0r 30 spline
« on: Jul 11, 2005, 04:30:08 AM »
Guys looking at buying some new birfs.
Was looking at the longfield 27 spline or the 30 spline sets.
Is there much diff between the 2 i read the 30 spline uses the c clip and no need for martac is the 27s the same?
Also what part of the US is WA ?washington?
I may need to call and order a set im from Australia
I have dual cases with 4:1 rear and 2.28 front just exploded me first birf and dont wanna do it again lolol.
thanks
Dave

What size tires are you running with what axle gearing?  I like the 27 spline if you are running 35-38 inch tires...this way you can carry your old birfs as spares.  With bigger tires than that though, you might want to go full out with the 30 splines.  I believe that all of the superlongfield kits (27 and 30) do not need the martack...I think there is a bulge machined into the shaft to serve the same purpose?

Are you still running the stock birfs?

30 spline...and you can still use your stock birfs and axles if need be..just swap it all as a whole and its a done deal..with the 30 splines though your stock birfs and axles will get loaned out more then you will EVER use them..

I think i may get the 30 spliners and be done with it.
Has anyone had problems breaking there free wheelin hubs with the new longs?
Now with the 30 spliners what will happen next me gears may go bang ? or will i blow the detroit no spin locker out? any experiences?
Thanks again guys

all of the above :rivers:  but you not running a 60 so you have to expect to bust :pokinit: from time to time..But there are more ways to add strength,,drive flanges,,cryo ring and pinion,,cryo hub gears..The detroit will prolly hold up better now with the 30 splines over anything..Detroits usally bust from the shock of broken axles,,I doubt you will bust a 30 splins so not that it won't happen,,but less likey then with a axle that could bust or will bust..

According to Bobby, the hub is now the "fuse"

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=372780

IMHO, I would rather change a hub than a birf.  That is why I went with his Cromo R/P 5.29's and his Super Axles.  Sure it's more money, short term, less down time if I bust a hub on the Trail, long term.

Thanks guys.
Does Bobby actually sell cryod 5.29s ? or do ya send them too him to be done?
I would go for the crod front and leave the rear as its a daily driver.

Bobby used to sell the cromo ring and pinion, he doesn't now.  I am pretty sure he will cromo anything you send him.

from what I understand its not that he don't sell them anymore, its that the 5.29's were on back order for a while..

Either way, 40 bucks to get your ring and pinion heat treated and cryoed ain't a bad deal

I don't know if poly performance even sells 30 spline axles,,and I doubt there 27 spline stuff is as strong as bobbys 30 spline,,,and if polly does sell the 30 spline axles,,I really doubt they could be all that stronger if any..Just get bobbys 30 spline axles and birfs and don';t worry about it..
Trust me,,you birf and axle prayes have been awnsered by the god of birfeilds,,bobbylong,,toyota axle saint..

Im soon going to order 30's also. Figure ill ask a question also. If im running 30's and hydro assist and NO locker in the front would i still have a chance of busting a 5.29 r/p or a hub? Seems most the stress is because of the locker that forces them to bust.

The inner shafts you are talking about are poly's super bling $550 just for the inners 300M axleshafts.  That is bank baby, lotta money.

I just went back to the Pirate thread with the Longfield data, looks like the 30's hold up to nearly 9,000 lb-ft of torque.  Significantly more than the 27 longs and newfiels which are holding up to about 7,000...
