Is this normal
« on: Jul 01, 2005, 11:08:44 PM »
I have a 92 Toyota now, the shifters never even come close to hitting each other.

I just bought an 83, the shifters hit eachother.  For example, If I'm in 4lo and try to shift into 2nd, it knocks the transfer case stick all the way back.

It does have a body lift, but I don't think that should make a difference, unless the shifters are extended too far.

Bend the shifter until they don't hit. I had to bend the rod on mine. We took it out heated it & bent it.

This is a common problem on the early trucks.

1. Check for a worn or missing trans handle seat or socket.
I invented a heavy duty replacement seat and socket--they are on my web site.

2. T-case handle could be installed 180 degrees backwards.

If all else fails, remove the t/case handle, mount it in a vise and then slide a section of pipe over the handle and bend it as required.
Using a torch is not advised due to the two piece vulcanized design of the handle.
