I'm looking at an 84 4Runner with no engine.  I've got an 85 PU with the 22R.  Was the only engine available in the 84 4Runner a 22R?  I know that 85 is the first year of EFI in the PU but didn't know if that was the case in the 4Runner.

Thanks
Aaron

You need to know what engine used to be in the runner??
22R.
Don't believe any of the 84 models ever came with EFI.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

That's what I thought but I wasn't 100% sure, can anybody else confirm this?

CTENG : yea, I need to know which motor the 84 4Runner came with.  I was thinking of swapping my 22R out of my truck and into the 4runner but thought if it was already setup with EFI from the factory, I could just find a 22RE and put that in there.

I'll look for something when I go look at it, thanks for the heads up.  Sticker on door, does it say if it's EFI?

Thanks again

85 = first year of EFI, last year of solid axle. Throw a 22R in the 84  4Runner & go

in 84 runners EFI was an option 85 forward was standard.
trucks i believe got carbs to 88.
the emissions sticker would tell you , as would the VIN tag on the firewall.
an EFI runner should have had a W56 and a carb would be G52 or 54
also the EFI tag on the tailgate is a dead givaway
hold this. . .

Thanks to everybody's replys, I'll report back what I found out when I go and look at it.

About the propane conversion, I'm super interested but kinda hesatent(sp) at throwing $900 into the kit and it just working OK or not as good as an EFI swap.

Not true, my friend had an 87 4runner that was carburated.
In Progress: 3RZ-FE Swap Underway.

Currently: 87' 4Runner - SAS - 5.29's - welded rear - Dual 2.28 cases - Optima bluetop - round headlight conversion - FZJ80 grill - rattlecan paint job - trimmed fenders - Ranger hybrid springs front - Tacoma hybrid springs rear - schedule 160 drivelines 8" slip front - Marlin's crossmember - disk brake conversion

79-83earlyota

ALL 84 4Runners were carbed, EFI was NOT an option :shakehead:
ALL 85 4Runners were EFI, NONE were carbed :yesnod:
I have never seen an 86 or 87 4Runner with a 22R carbed motor, although some claim they are out there, i'm sure they are extremely rare or swapped in, if it's true... :-\\

I don't think you would have to worry about performance...from what I have read and heard, everyone who owns one of those gotpropane kits LOVES them.  I wouldn't hesitate for a second...hell I think it is better option than EFI.

Well, I'm the proud new owner of an 84 4Runner      It's in decent shape, better than my 85 PU in term of body and rust.  The engine bay was clean as well as the front axle which at least on my 85 is oily as hell.  I think the 22R was hydolocked, his son messed it up playing in the mud  :tantrum:

The interior is OK but better than my truck.  I plan on taking out the nasty carpet and hurculining the thing.  Seats are in decent shape.

My big plan was to make my 85 into a hardcore rockcrawler, making a flatbed for it and all that jazz.  Well, things change and families get bigger so I now need the room for my wife and the little girl we had 2 months ago.  I'm planning on more so the extra room will be used.  I still want to make the 4Runner into a hardcore rig but at least have some room for the wife and kids if they want to come along and at least have a roof over their heads in the weather.

I'm new to the 4Runner game, I've been doing a ton of research on trucks over the last couple of years.  I'm going to need to find info like trimming the rear fender areas and painting the hard top and possibly making a soft top, stuff that wasn't nessessary for the truck.

I'll be asking a ton of questions
