Tire Siping

Hey, any of you know whether or not there is any advantages/disadvantages to having your tires siped? Some claim about a 10% increase in traction as well as cooler running rubber.

I've run siped tires for the past 5 years and love it. I only siped the center lugs and did them by hand using a groover tool with the blade turned up-side-down. Takes about 15-20 minutes per tire when done by hand and the tool is only like $60 or so.

I have been siping mine for about 6 or 7 years now.AWESOME in the ice.Also great on wet slimey rock.I noticed i got alot more miles out of my tires too.I had mine done at a local tire store for 8 bucks a tire.The only bad thing I can say is sometimes you get little chunks missing from where tires slip on sharp rocks.But did not effect the tire as far as i could tell..I also had the siped all the way across the tire,not just the middle.But that seems to work well too..

Was this on your Cow or your Pickup?

I've heard they do well on the wet (yes snow smart ass) but I suppose more important wets are during your travels to and from the trails, and Im not talking about your pants. Having space for water and sand to move into helps out dramatically on flat hard surfaces, such as pavement. Even though its hard to break some 13" wide footprint, the added security and control is sure welcomed.

If you hit the rocks alot, like the Hammers, be ready to replace them soon. Like Mr4x4 said, chucks ahoy!

Niether, The difference was between my rig (Pickup) and a 4 runner in the deep snow. He got traction and I did not. 95% minimum in my eyes. On the cruiser I have noticed the siping helps traction 10%? yeah.

Tires chunk in the rocks, period. A little more and faster with siping. Worth it for me. :up: :up:

I hear some people actually sip their landcruiser itself. Removes some weight and makes it a bit more aerodynamic!

I've never used MTRs but I've only heard good things about 'em.

Marlin's TSR Swapmers sure work magic over BFG MTs.

Is there only one kind I am supposed to do?I love it all..we have a awesome rock garden not too far from my house with good trails with mud,rock and in the late dec there is mass snow up there.. :up: :up: I have seen them on a rig and they are not as wide as they sound.And on a 35 look just right.I thought the 35 1250 looks a bit on the narrow side..guess there is only one way to find out I guess

.If I odn't like them guess you'll see them here for sale.I have a wile before that though.I have 33 1250 ssr on my runner now and they have a bit before there gone. :up:

Boy, this got way out there from the siping issue! I first ran into siped tires at Moab...they worked awsome on the slickrock. Got my BFG Mud TA's sipped and they work great. Better in the ice, rocks, and at Moab. America's tires in Roseville does siping around here. The trick is to not go all the way to the edge. They don't sipe the outer lugs on either side which pretty much eliminates chunking. Mine have been on Rubicon, Moab, Dusey etc with no chunks yet....

Hey Waterman,
What kind of siping did you do to your lugs; an actual 'groove' down them or just the cut with an exacto knife? If you got pics that'd be cool too. Tryin to make my 33 BFG muds last for this years rubicon.
