Is there a trick or tool (other than a shop press) to use that makes it easier to replace rear axle bearings on a 92 pickup? I had a friend do it and grenade the old bearing race cause he was using it as a press.  :smack:  He about killed himself and everyone around him. I was going to take the axles and have someone do it for me if it wasn't worth the hassle of doing it myself. Thanks. Just trying to save some $ and learn at the same time.

I usually take my axle shaft/drum assembly to my local shop.  It costs me $120.00 out the door.  That includes the new factory toyota bearing and the labor to remove the old and install the new.

i buy my bearings at applied power(king bearing)  or some other bearing place and the keeper ring at toyota and then have it all pressed apart and together for me.

sometimes i will take the bearing sleeve thing off with a grinder first to save time.  that is the cheapest way i have found to do it.

bearings are usually about half the price at a bearing place.

Thanks for the info. Thats what I figured. Easier with less hassle to take the axles to someone and have em do it for ya. I have access to a shop press so I figured I would ask. But in the end PRICE<HASSLE...

These work somewhat like the Toy "SST's":

After you grind the lock ring the puller bolts on and it uses a "bolt type" puller on top, no press needed. Second tool drives the bearing and lock ring on with a hammer. Made from pipe, plate, a fitting and some bolts from the junk drawer.

I was at Marlins Shop recently and he was doing an axle for a customer. It was recently done by someone else and they used a blowtorch to get the race off :~~: :~~: :~~: :~~:  there was a big hole in the axle from the cutter tip. This is probably not the way to do it :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack:

Some people use the blue wrench just a little too much. :headshake:

I made a gig from an old axle housing. Cut out a step where the pumpkin goes. And cut it in half so 2" or so of the axle comes out the end. This can be used in a press. But I have also used 2 Highlift jacks on a trailride just to see if I could.

Sorry no pics

Hey Krawlr, Do you have any more pics of the puller? Do you use some sort of cap piece that pushes on the shaft as you wrench it down? Guess I don't see what to use on the top piece to pull the bearing off the axle.  :dunno:

Yeah i don't think ill be using a torch on this...unless I want to replace the whole thing.  :thud:

Dude that makes me happy.. Being able to do the bearings without a press in my own garage. Thanks for the pics.
