L43 Tranny Info---Marlin?

Hi, Have lurked here a couple years now, and eventually became a customer.  Recently, I was asked if I'd do a little writeup on the Toyota L43 tranny (79-80). Bit of an odd duck, with very little Internet information for them.  Was wanting to ask Marlin if I could use some of his posts on the subject to see if we can come up with something the drivers/restorers can use.

i know a little about them as my truck used to have one in it.  it's kind of a strange transmission as it loads from the side, and has a 3.67 first gear(and corresponding higher gears except for 4th), compared to most others with a 3.93 first.  it was originally a car/2wd tranny and was adapted with a wierd tailhousing for '79-80 4x4s

I had one too....then I threw it in the dumster.  ok ok, i'm sorry.  Mine was just wining real bad and I found a great deal on a l52 tranny. But pluses , I guess, removeable bell housing, um light weight.......

Thanks guys, it's little stuff like this that's needed to get this put together. I have a guy down in Anchorage who is going to stuff a new frame under his '80, so hopefully will get some pictures out of him this summer. BTW, I've got an EPC shot of the main shifter hardware if anyone needs it. He buggered his grommets a little while ago. Vice grips don't work too well on these!!

you can get the plastic grommet thingys from toyota fairly cheap

the tail pieces are made out of aluminum and they crack and brake all the time.

Really??  I have over 500,000 miles on mine with no signs of cracking :dunno:

i broke 2 in a row in less then 150 miles. motor mounts, transfer case mounts and everything are good no abnormal shaking just broke 2 and im on my 3rd one.

because its in a L43 transmission information thread and this is someones information that has one and has had experiences with it.

Strange :headscratch:  I have bad t-case mounts and have flogged my truck unmerciful.  Yours is the first case I've ever heard of them cracking yet, but it's something to look out for.  That being said, mine is getting pulled in favor of an 5 speed.

yea i have an L52 sitting in my garage im just waiting till i gather more parts for other stuff and then it will all get done at once with a doubler and transfer case e-brake crossmember.

thats weird  cause i ran my L43  with dual cases  and  kept breaking motor mounts  till i chained it down

just had the same issue. my aluminum adapter plate just cracked into 4 different pieces.
79 flatbed, 20r w/ weber, locked front and rear with lock-rites, 5.29's, 34" swampers, terafex shackles, yadda yadda yadda....

Umm im not all to sure on the weight, but by the looks of it, Id say less than half as much as a W56 haha, L series are tiny little buggers

it's basically the same as an L43, just smaller bearings i think... and 4 speed obviously
