I am obsessed with Toyota 4x4 trucks but I don't even own one! I spend most of my nights after work researcing parts and mods.

I have a 73 Chevy that is falling apart and the th350 tranny just took a crap as of yesterday.

Must.....buy.....Toyota.

I am a poor mechanic who is in training right now to become a horse shoer. I am going to try and unload my Chevy and save up and get an 86-95 and do a solid axle swap.

because if you can weld and fabricate a bit, an SAS will be cheaper and you have to do less parts scrounging than on a straight axle truck.  not to mention a lot of the guys with '85 trucks think they have a gold mine and try and rape your wallet

84-85 are getting harder to find and more expensive. plus i think the tranny are better in the newer trucks arent they? plus i like doing the swap and putting in a fresh front end and parts.

Toyota 4WD Transmission Strength Comparo:

From Weakest ---> Strongest:

L-series (1979-1983) --> G52 (1984) --> G52 & rare-G58 (1985-1988 Carb) --> W-series (1985-1995 EFI) --> R-series (1986-1987 Turbo; 1988-2005+ V6)

I've not seen the inside of the new 6 Speed Taco transmission, so excluding that, the R-series transmisison is the strongest 4WD Transmission Toyota has ever made.

BigMike
