spool and birfeilds
« on: Apr 07, 2003, 11:57:03 PM »
I was wondering others imput on this..With a spool limiting the amout the front can turn,do you think this would increse birfield life..Also,,big mike,,whats your imput on this..If longs treatment can make a stock toy birf stronger,,what would happen and could it be done if a marfeild were to be treated the same way? :dunno:

A spool doesn't limit the actual amount the tire/wheel/knuckle can turn. It just makes both tires turn at the same rate all the time (can't differentiate) so the truck goes in more of a straight line. So the birfs are still seeing the same angles and being subjected to more stress/bind because there is no slip in the diff. Make sense? Besides having a spooled front end would make turning much more difficult.......atleast on hard surfaces. If I am correct part of how longfiels get their strength is by having  a ring welded on the end like the original marfields........the new marfields start off bigger so a ring couldn't be and wouldn't need to be added. Hope I helped answer your question.

Well I was wondering about the freezing proccess..Not so much about the ring..It was to my understanding the ring was not for strength but for limiting the amount the birf can turn..The less it can turn the less likly its to break..I thought about a spool in the front..I hear good and bad like everything else...My lockrite in there now is hammered and seen better days..it still works but its been in there for 4 or 5 long years of beating and has only broke a couple of times but want to upgrade before mcr3..Just wondering others luck..Looks like detroit..still not sure..

It is only harder to turn with a spool because your inside wheel is grabbing hard as you turn into it and it tries to spin the same amount as the outside one.
YOu should be able to turn almost just as much as with an automatic locker like a detroit or a  lockrite, but just a tiny bit less.
You will create more stress on the birfield because there will be no give, so you will be increasing your chances of busting a birfield.

Longfields are good because they are DE-heattreated after the outter ring is fused on it. This makes it yield rather than sheering (cracking).

We talked to our Manufacture about lowering the heat treatment to the Marfields, but they would not change it for us. They are abunch of loonies. That's why we have stopped buying and selling them. We now only sell Longfields. Im working on removing the Marfields from the page and putting up the Longfields.

Because our company that makes our Marfields is unwilling to improve them, we have stopped selling them and have switched over to Longfields.

Spool in the front = tire wear every month.
