Okay ... I did search and found some information but not the answer I was looking for ... Can a rear 88 4cyl third member fit into a 88 V6 rear axle housing? If so, any issues? If not ... I'll have a 4cyl. 3rd member, 5.29 gears (unknown brand), welded carrier (spooled) for sale soon ...

Yes it can. All 4WD 4cyl NA and Turbo, and 3.0 V6 8" differentials are interchangeable between all 8" 79-95, Including 96-2005 TRD rear ends (e-locking 8").

The best setup is to run a V6 diff. You could even run a 1995 V6 diff in a 1979 rear end. Very strong compared to the 4cyl diff.

10-4...he's right!  why are you goning to put a 4cyl 3rd in a v6 housing behind a v6???

Including 96-2005 TRD rear ends (e-locking 8").

I was just thinking about this, I am right about it fitting, but I believe two of the studs for the e-locking diff need to be repositioned for the bolt pattern of a non e-locker.

You have to clearance the housing for the shift fork on the motor assembly too.
