Axle gear ratio
« on: May 10, 2005, 03:44:20 PM »
I have an 85 rear axle and want to take the third out and put into my 86 housing.  The gears in the 85 axle are 4.10, what are the gears in my 86' 22re 5spd stock.

4.10.  No reason to change anything if the 3rd is still factory. ;)
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

The reason I wanted to change differintials is beacause I know that the one I have in the Runner now is in good condition, the other one is not, the pinion gear is rubing the carrier when you press in on the pinion, when you pul out on the pinion it does not rub.  I am thinking a crush sleeve or maybe it is not tight or I can put in a washer to space it out.  I want to use the one with problems for my first attempt at welding diffs. And keep the one that is set up right for a spare incase shiat breaks.  If the welding process go's good I will use the welded one for learning how to set up my own gears in futur progress :yesnod:

Good deal then.  Have fun and dont forget to weld in a piece of 1/4" plate over the window between the side and spider gears.

So there is more strength in the weld.  I cut plate and drop it down so it sits on the cross shaft and I weld the side gears and the spider's to it.  I also weld the side gears to the carrier.  Just welding the spider gears to the side gears is not very strong beings the spiders are small and will just explode..
