Someone finally built a toy portal. I was reading a new issue af Offroad Adventures and saw a buggy in there running toyota unimog hybrid portal axles. They use inverted toy v6 thirds with mog outers. The gear ratio used in the thirds is 4:10 with a final axle ratio of 8:34. Here is a pic out of the mag, enjoy.

interesting and ironic...I just started a topic about regular Unimog axles under a Toy.  I would like to find out more about these, the pic/image didn't really turn out :dunno:  Hook us up w/ some more info/pics if you can :confused:  :help:

I think I fixed the pic . The axle is made by a company named canyon krawlers. They say that they are going to be offering these as a production item in the near future. :crossed: The article didn't have a web adress but i'm sure they have one if you do a little digging.

Canyon Krawlers is a 4wd club in the Tahoe area.  One of the guys that started it was in TTC a couple years ago in his sami with toy axles.

It doesn't seem like they gained too much ground clearance with those portal boxes.

gay i am all for toyota parts but you go through all that work and still have a 8" ring gear i have seen plenty of those blow apart. why not use a 60 center? also i saw the buggy at goldendale and did it ever kick ass. it had a mazda turboed rotary. and i second it would be ideling up a rock and the next millisecond it would be on the rev limiter. thatg motor revved quick. i like the idea of rotary you have much more tires speed variation per gear. but the power/torque band is in exactly the wrong place.

well i think most of the stress would be taken off the ring gear with the set-up.  after reading the article it looks like they run the 3ed upside down for some reason.  i guess they either fixed the oiling problem or didn't think about it.  then they attached unimog portal ends on it.  atleast there arn't any birfields to worry about.

interesting idea.  but i think it would be cheaper to swap to an atlas or tacoma transfer case and run unimog axles with a lower gear ratio.  not to mention much stronger anyway.

They turned the V6 axles upside down so the thirds are now high pinions.  but i don't know about the oiling issue either.

The gears in the portals causes the rotation of the drive axle to have to turn backwards. That is why they turned the third over. It is still driving on the drive side of the gear, but the axles are going backwards so the wheels will go forward. Also the stress on the thirds is less than that of a standard axle by the amount of reduction at the wheels.  Oiling isn't a concern in a buggy I guess.

for the money spent on a toy/mog axle i would just invest in the tried and true d-60..

Mog boxes only use 2 gears, meaning that the input goes in one way and after spinning the gear, power comes out in the reverse direction. As far as the oiling issue, has anyone ever seen a full on Comp buggy driving down the freeway @ 70? Neither have I. The oiling issue really becomes a non issue as the maximum speeds run by most Comp only buggies is maybe 20 mph and only for a brief second.
The reason they are using the Toy center and are not at all concerned about breakage is that the portal boxes absorb the majority of the torque coming back into the drivetrain before it reaches the portal box. When you calculate the drive ratio you go: tranny gear x t-case gear x t-case gear x axle ratio x portal box. In our trucks, the axles see 4-5 times more torque than the last t-case. So when a excessive torque load is divided by a portal box before entering the third itself, the torque load is extremely decreased. And if you have no need for an oversized 60 center, you run a shaved toy center that will get you a couple of more inches of ground clearance.  :thumbs:
