used 20R with 100K miles...whats it worth?
« on: May 03, 2005, 05:38:51 PM »
I pulled the 20R from my 1980 when I swapped in the 22RE EFI, it ran great when I pulled it and had about 100,000 miles, but I REALLY wanted the fuel-injection for 'crawlin'.  Anyway, it's a full (complete) block with carb., alternator, distributor, etc., what do you guys think it's worth???  ???

not in any kind of demand any more(especially since a 22R is a bigger bolt-in swap) so i'd say $150, maybe $250 on the high end.  100k is pretty low for a 20R though, most i've seen have around 2 or 3 times that much :beerchug:

if you have a competent machine shop the 20R can be bored to take stock 22R pistons

if some one give you $100 i would take it,  if i was closer i'd give you $150  unseen

remember Kyle,   for a hybrid   you gotta have a 20R head, timing cover,  the cranks and rods are the same :dunno:

man maybe i need to buy that thing after all :headscratch:

nah, 20R and early 22R(at least up to '82 are the same, i think maybe they might've changed in '83-84 with the single chain) are the same for the timing cover.  crank, rods are the same.

i wouldn't bother boring out a 20R, just get replacement pistons.  you're not gonna get much more power from an overbore anyway

If you want, i'd do $100 even + whatever shipping is to your shop/home.  I can steam clean/degrease it, and bolt it to a pallet for you, if you wanna PM me your ZIP code, or post it below, I can find out what shipping would be.  I think those motors weigh in somewhere between 175-225???  But I could be a little off?? :headscratch: Anyway, let me know if you really want it, it would be a good lower end to deck with a 20R head and the dual timing chain/cover, cranks, rods, as you said.  You can't beat the dual row chain with the metal guides, they don't wear out like the newer single rows with plastic guides.  Think about it!!  Lemmeknow man..... :beerchug:

the only engines that came with the dual row chain from factory were the 79-80 20R.  You can get an adapter kit to change over the the single pattern on 22R motors to a dual set-up that were manufactured up until about late '83/early '84; but the 22R that came out in '81 started out with a single chain.  Maybe that is what you were thinking about?????  Either way, you really can't go wrong with a 20R or 22R if you're not worried about racing up mountain freeways, they're both good 'crawler engines :driving:, and the 20R has really good low end torque for low range power.

Kyle is partly right 80-81 22's had dual chains,   82 some were some were singles,  i hink they were just using up the duals they already had,   i have seen singles on 81's and duals on 84's from the factory but rare

every '82 model engine ive seen had a dual chain from the factory.  the only difference between an '81-82 22R('80 were all 20R) and a 20R is that the 22R has a bigger bore with domed pistons, different head and a different intake manifold/carb

The only single row factory engines I've ever seen are 84 or newer I believe, nothing older.  Dual row is the way to go, and I have a stock 81 w/350,000ish miles on stock everything to prove it.  I'm real tempted to get a metal guide for my '91 for piece of mind, but it has around 35,000 miles on a toyota chain so I'm not too worried about it yet.  And Kyle is basically right about the differences between the engines, there are no real block differences aside from bore, it's mostly up top.  If I ever see a single row chain in an older rig I would assume it's a replacement.

 man, I stand corrected on that one, I really thought 81 and newer had single chains, but apparentely not the case!?  In any event, I am glad to know the facts after all.  You guys obviously know what your talking about more than I do :yesnod:   Anyway, 79coyotefrg, thanks for the ZIP -- when Monday comes around, i'll contact some shipping companies and get you a price to ship that 20R!!!  Hell, $100, you might as well, I need the thing out of my hair already!!!

'83 was the first year of the single chain and plastic guides.  the single chain doesn't bother me as much as the plastic guides -- how often do you hear about a toy timing chain breaking?
