more crap for my 82 truck
« on: May 02, 2005, 07:22:15 PM »
Well here's some of the stuff i have been doing to my truck lately.

I got my Sky-Manufacturing Hysteer from roadlessgear
It cost me a mere $413 shipped to my door.

sure looks perdy painted blue.

sky's chevy rear ubolt flip kit.
I painted it blue as well.

Now I need to get around to the chevy spring swap.

Bud Built banana shackles for running the rear springs up front.  I did the same paint scheme.

I am probably gonna do a hybrid 88 2wd leaf pack for the front.

I have to order the spring hanger for the rear and the shackle kit so I will likely order that from sky as well.

My 2000 2wd chevy silverado 63" leaf springs

Painted up my IFS steering box for the hysteer install

Thrush cherry bomb

Ordered up a hidden hitch winch mount plate for my magnum 9000 winch today.
I bought it from JC Whitney for $42.99 online it was like $51 shipped.

I also got my front licence plate today pretty trick:

Here's the ford f250 shock mounts:

Rancho 5012 shocks:
collapsed

extended

My buddy can't squeeze me in untill next week to get the spring hangers and stuff welded on so I have to wait to get it done.

Other than that my wife and I are on not very good speaking terms lately.
I am sure she is quite pissed that i have blown ta least $5000 on my truck this year and the bill keeps going up and up...

More stuff to follow. :king:

hey, looks good...just one thing though.  don't paint the inside of the cone washer surface as well as the kingpin/knuckle side of the steering arms!  you want that to be BARE METAL so everything will seat correctly!

Yup I know I already cleaned out the areas where cone washers sit. That pic was taken a day after I painted it.

Please post some pictures after you get your suspension done.  I want to see how the rears up front turn out.  That's the route I'm taking and I want to see how well everything comes together and how much lift you get out of them.  Looks good by the way  :usa:

Well finished the rear shock tower mount.

I used a pic of angle iron 4x4 I believe cut down to 6" and I had two 11/16 holes punched into either corner. It makes welding so much easier to have all this stuff precut to just weld it on.

Also finished the framing for the flatbed.

I used 3/16 steel for the flatbed. I had 2 peices of 2x2 angle cut at lengths of 62" and 2 cut at 63"
The base that the flatbed was mounted to was made out of 2 peices of 2x2 boxed cut at 62". I also used 4 peices of 2x2 cut at 2" to weld as legs to the frame mounts. I used 1" body-lift blocks to space it from the frame.
I haven't decided what to use fr the floor yet I am thinking of just using wood as a floor because of the flated size.

Couldn't do much else the welder I had rented broke the cooling fan inside the miller 135 fell to peices inside it and it shutdown.
The rental place only charged me 1 day of use instead of 2 but I was still pissed off I couldn't finish other things I wanted to.
Oh well next week I will bring my truck over to Damien's house when he has sometime to finsh the rest of the suspension.

Alot of thanks goes out to RJ in the last pic he helped me do the finish welds on the flatbed.
I was temporaily blinded from having welders flash the day before yesterday.
I was a tard didn't use the sheild as much as I should have and I couldn't continue with it since I couldn't see very well at all.
I got checked out by the VA yesterday at least I didn't have any permanant damage.
I am getting my sight back the milky white halo everything had is gone today but my eyes are still quite red.

I gotta get a auto darking helmet sometime if I weld again. I don't want to go through this crap again very scary to almost loose your sight.

some more pics:
The mounts:

The flatbed:

it's about 75% done I need to finish the gas filler mount and the new taillight mounts and the floor of the flatbed.
I am also thinking of throwing in another center support bracket as well although it's not needed.

I built this bed trying to keep the design as simple as possible

Looks great, way better than the rusty bed.  I've got a rusty bed as well and I can't wait to get rid of it  :flamer:

Did you get the steering installing?  I couldn't tell from the later pictures.

Picked up a peice of 60x61"expanded metal today for $63.00.
It's mean't for stairwalks and stuff plenty thick for a flatbed.
I will put a cross brace in so it has more center support for hauling things.

I also moved my tailights trying to find a good location for whatever lights I will run on this.

I still have to build the rear bumper with the class III receiver and find a good location for my tailight's.
I did get my Hidden Hitch Class III multimount for my winch today.
It was $50 well spent. Only issue it looks like it's designed for just a hawse fairlead and it won't line up with the roller fairlead so I have to drill some holes next to the existing ones so I can get the roller one to fit.

Here's some anti-flex pics.
I really need to install those chevy leaf springs. The flex sucks with the stock pack but I don't have any weight on the bed either.

Of course the front leaf's flex just fine.

Added 3 center supports the two sides are 1x1 1/4" and the center is 3/16" angle iron. I also added 2 peices of 3/16 plate they at least keep alot of stuff from flying through the expanded metal.
Also lifted the flatbed more with 4 more 1" body-lift blocks so basically it has a 2" lift now.

Added a bracket for the gas filler.

Side view I don't know if I want to keep the roll bar. I cut the legs but it turns out they are way too short.
I would have to lift the whole thing at least 4-5" to make it worth it.

Anyways it's getting there. I still need the side bars and a front bar.

I got the hysteer done tonight drove it home.

After working on it all day yesterday and then having to leave it overnight at RJ's
Most of the time was grinding the reminants of that damn torque arm bracket off.

"Hey RJ I thought I had another 2 hours"      I know it was just a estimate.

It actually took another 5 or so to complete it.
RJ welded on a 3/16" plate to the backside of the frame for some renforcement for the steering box.
We drilled the frame sleeve holes in stages with a 1/2" drill bit first then a 3/4" bit and then a 7/8" bit.
The 7/8" bit was the most expensive it was about $35.99 for the darn thing.

I used my old 82 steering shaft on the IFS box. I liked that one since it has the slip spline shaft on it made it alot easier than drilling out those silly pins.
The steering lines hooked right up. However I kept having to add power steering fluid to the resivour.
It still seems like there is a little air in the system but it got me home never the less.

The other thing I noticed after having the ifs box mounted the IFS arm hangs really low it is a little too close to my spring. The arm at the bottom of the nut hangs about 1" from my spring. I am thinking I need to get a modifyed IFS steering arm or a straight arm for it.

Everything else clears without issue though.

Hey and a big thanks to RJ and his welding and drilling skillz.
RJ says I am now known as the drill bit killa since I dulled out at least 2 of the 3 drill bits but we still got it done.

Anyways I caught hell with the old lady for being gone all day again. Looks like I am sleeping on the couch tonight...

A small price to pay though since my hysteer is now done.

The 2 way brakelights and the signal lights I got from Advance Auto Parts for about $5 ea they take 1157 bulbs.
The backup lights are el cheapo $15 pilot 55 watt fog/driving lights from Walmart. I am not too concerned about wiring them up w/o a relay since they are on for a short period of time when in reverse. Anyways the kit came with wires and a toggle switch so they really can't draw a alot of juice.
I the nice thing is the brake/signal lights are both 2 way lights so I have them hooked up so when I hit the brakes both the orange and the red lights illuminate.
I also still have parking and signals as well.

hey, what combination of rear springs are you running in the front?  inquiring minds want to know

my hysteer kit and other stuff from marlin should be here tomorrow :crossed: i'm not gonna be able to leave that poor truck be for too long after the stuff arrives, the itch is too strong!

when i mount my IFS box(when i find one, that is) i'm going to try and tilt it as much as i can so the pitman arm clears the frame and the springs.  probably will buy one of those stepped drill bits as well, if i can find one big enough.

Kyle,

I am getting to the rear springs on front.
I plan on probably using a 88 2wd spring pack with 2 addtional leaf springs.
The addtional leaf springs will be basically staggered at 2" in the front 3" in the back. supposedly this pack will give you 4" of lift.

It's best to just drill in stages I started with a 1/2" drill bit once we got the box where we wanted it. Then went to a 3/4" drill bit and finally a 7/8" drill bit for the sleeves and did a test fit of the box again and welded them in place.
.
Also have fun cutting off that GD torque arm bracket that thing was the biggest PITA.
It takes a while make sure you have a die grinder we wouldn't have been able to do it without one.

Well did a few things yesterday.
Chevy springs are done.

Yes I know WT I actually went ahead with it.
It actaully flexes really nice with them. I think my flatbed adds enough weight to it.
Also I have bu built spring hangers and actually have rock skids on them so I know I will probably need them.
It's clean now but I had taken it out to test it out yesterday evening and I had the 35's stuffed into the flatbed.

I now have a nice Class III hitch welded on.
My buddy gave me one for helping him out on his truck wiring.

Test fitted my Multi-mount magnum 9000lb winch

I have some electrical quick disconnects on order that's all I am waiting on to wire this up so I can use it on the back if needed.
