Just got a 1991 toyota truck 22re 5spd...Have some questions

As the title says, I just acquired a free '91 toyota truck with 180k on the clock from a family member. The truck is 2WD.

1. How capable are 2WD trucks off road? I would like to do some light trails/dirt roads and minimal mudding.

2. Would getting a rear locking differential improve the off road experience?

3. Any other wheeling equipment you would recommend to improve off road performance? It's currently 100% stock.

A locker and traction type tires would help. It might surprise you as to how well it would do. A winch might be an option

As far as being durable, not ab issue, a buddy back HS used to bomb his 2wd down the dry riverbed right along with 4x4's and drive it home.

For what you are wanting, a Prerunner build is likely the best route, i.e., 28" AT or MT tires, selectable locker, diff swap change to 4.10's, and then some bumpers, winch, and rocksliders.  This set-up should give you the ability to get into/out of most places that you can get into with stock 4x on street tires up to those areas that most with stock 4x4 rigs would go before risking damage.

Something to consider, is what is the overall condition of the '91, if like new, might not be worth beating up on the trails, while it is a 2wd, their market values have increased significantly, in my area they are being listed around $5500-7k.
