W Series Compatibility
« on: Jul 09, 2024, 04:39:20 PM »
Good Day All,

I am gearing up for a potential 7MGTE swap into my 85.  I am worried my clutch and W56 are not strong enough for such a swap.  I have no intentions of going for crazy HP(5-8 psi boost) and may even go for a NA 7MGE instead depending on what I find.

One seller has a W58 he is offering alongside his 7MGE on which he did the NA-T conversion.  I am tempted to buy his whole setup, 7MG(T)E and W58, because he has a 400HP clutch, ARP hardware in it, and the marginally better strength of the W58, but it is obviously an added cost.  Alternatively he said he could throw the clutch into the deal if I buy the motor so I have 2 questions.

First, would the W58 clutch drop right into the W56? My understanding is, for this swap, I would need a W58 bellhousing, clutch fork, throwout bearing, slave cyl, and slave cyl hose, so I assume the W58 clutch would be just fine.

Second, would it be "worth it" to just get his W58 as well? I am interested in doing so because my W56(or maybe the t-case...) is pretty noisy once I get going 60+mph.  Using his reasonably low mile W58 would also ensure parts compatibility but comes with a few sub-questions.  Could I take the tail off and mate it to my VF1A T case? Would I really feel the taller 1st gear(I intend to dual t-case it eventually, and actually kind of like the idea of a tall 5th gear).

Thank you all for the knowledge I have already gathered here.  I hope to learn more yet.
