How would I tell if I have 2.28 or 4.7 gears in tcase?

So I bought this 87 4runner with dual cases 5 years ago, didn't really know much about this stuff at the time so didn't think to ask the guy about the gearing... He did tell me that it had dual cases with an Advance Adapter (sorry, I would've bought a Marlin dual case adapter if it were me who built this truck) and that's pretty much all I know about it.

A few days ago there was a not so pleasant noise while driving, so I parked it until I could investigate. The front crawl box (right after the transmission) looked pretty oily on the outsideso I suspected I lost all the oil and ran the gears dry. Pulled the drain plug and out came plenty of oil along with alot of metal pieces. Drained the other transfer case and that seemed ok, just a small amount of fine metal shaving sludge stuck to the magnetic drain plug. Pulled that case off, then pulled the front crawl box off. So the bearing on the top/backside (output?) looks like the bearing cage is gone (so that's where all that metal came from?). I haven't opened it up yet, but if I need to replace the gears how would I tell if they are the stock 2.28 or 4.7? Both cases have 21 spline input shafts. I plan to get a major rebuild kit and replace all bearings/seals, and part of me wants to replace the gears (given the metal they must've ate), but part of me is hoping the gears are ok and I won't have to spend a bunch more money...

Also if the cases were mixed 2.28/4.7, would it matter if they were in a certain order? Like front 2.28 then 4.7 in the next case?

Well I'd appreciate any help you folks are willing to share, and any tips on anything else while I have this all torn apart?
Thanks

You want 2.28x4.70 and not the other way around.

You have to open it and verify what's gear you have. I hate to say it but majority of the rigs are built with 2.28x2.28 and not with a 4.70.

So 2.28 right after the transmission and then 4.7 after that?

I realized I could mark both the input and output and then see how many times the input has to turn in order for the output to complete one revolution. Just a little over two full turns so I've got 2.28 in this crawl box at least. And there is a chipped tooth on one of the gears, so looks like I'll be buying a new set...

Also realized the two bearings in the adapter might be something different than what would be included in a normal tcase rebuild kit? It was the bigger output bearing that failed, which can be removed and replaced. The lower bearing in the adapter seems to be pressed in though. I'll do some digging tomorrow and figure out if I can get replacements for those if they are specific to the AA adapter. I'd sure love to have a MC08, but I would hate to have to spend that money on top of everything else  :hammerhead:
