Hub rebuild
« on: Feb 09, 2022, 08:24:15 AM »
Whilst completely rebuilding my axle I got everything done on both sides apart from the axle. After I packed the bearings and installed them low range offroad recommends to torque to 43 ft-lbs and in their video, their hub was still freely moving if with some resistance. Once I did this my hub was locked in place. I tried rotating the hub as I slowly tightened it to try to keep the bearings packed into the races correctly but I still ran into the same problem except it seems like there is two spots where when rotating the hub it feels as if either I did not pack the bearings well enough or there is a rough spot. Has anyone else run into this and/or have any recommendations? Just a heads up I cannot post any photos yet. Also might be useful to know these are all now bearings and races along with new seals.

Are you talking about wheel bearings? If you are that's too tight. I didn't see the video but, maybe that was a torque to make sure the bearings and races were seated? After that you loosen them and tighten enough to eliminate free play in the bearings. There is a spec but I just tighten to eliminate play and a bit more. While spinning the wheel. Ask 5 people how they do theirs and you might get 5 different ways. You shouldn't have any play but they shouldn't be tight either.

I'm talking about a straight axle on the 85 and earlier. If you're referring to something else I'm sorry. I just took a guess at what you were asking about.

If you're still working on this then you may want to check that everything is seated properly. It could be that the bearing or race is thingy-eyed and it is causing your wheel hubs to be overly tight and to experience tightness in certain spots where its most out of wack.

For clarity, the video says 43 ft-lbs to seat everything then back it off to then retighten to 4 ft-lbs
