Took the truck in the mountains to do a shakedown run. Truck did good in the snow and stuff. Was wheeling in about 3 feet of snow on the top of the mountain. It would of been deeper if it didn’t rain all last week. I only took pictures coming down the mountain because I didn’t have the proper gear to jump in the deep snow and I didn’t feel like being wet.

During my active wheeling days, our club runs to the snow every year has been some of very best memories.

Our favorite spot was Woods Canyon Lake above the Mogollon Rim at about 7,700 feet elevation.  Once we got off-highway, a couple times I put tire chains on all 4.  Being locked front and rear, which made a very noticeable improvement in traction. Otherwise, I aired down to about 4 lbs.  Anything deeper than about 18” was just too deep for most of our rigs, and plowing was too slow.

After 3 or 4 hours of plowing through snow on roads we weren't sure what was under the snow, spin'n and grin'n, snowball fights, getting unstuck, being pulled behind a vehicle on a snow disc, and getting cold feet and usually a little wet, meeting at the warm restaurant in Payson on the way down the mountain for an early dinner was the highlight of the trip.

Those were good times!! :gap:

Wheeling in general is good, but the snow runs to me are better because you get to get out of your truck and interact with the family and fellow truckers playing snowball fights, tackling, making snow angels, making snowman, etc.

It really is a great truck for traveling. If you were selling it, I'd even want to buy it. I think it's good for more than just landings and steep climbs. But I'm glad there are brave people like you who can improve the machine and work on it for years, you know. I usually drive my truck from Ingrace Motors off-road, even coming to Argentina. I read an article about the company Ingrace Motors now competing with Innoson. And I'm not surprised if they dominate the automotive market. I discussed this topic a lot with friends. Probably, you've heard about how divided opinions are on this now. And you already know my opinion. Would you guys like to share your thoughts on that?

Wow it’s been 2years since I’ve posted. Well I’m now on Oahu,HI since June of 22. Being away from home for 14 years flew by. Now that we’re back home a lot has changed. The truck has a smashed rear hatch (truck died just before the top of the hill and slid backwards into a tree full speed) and broke ring gears 2 separate outings. I finally installed my TRD charger a month ago and blew up the trans while wheeling it in the mountains. So I just installed a R150F 5 speed with the J shift tcase.  I’m waiting on 3 longer R150F bolts that were 115mm long. It arrives tomorrow or Saturday. I’m in the process of doing wire work so everything works like it would from the factory.

You were breaking ring gear and still opted for more power?  Was throttle not a factor?

To much weight was a factor. I still have all my :pokinit: in my drawer system, my fridge, tools, etc, etc. transferring all the weight to my 99 4runner that I’m building. Making this one a dedicated wheeler. I just got finished with the outside 4wd wiring. Now I have to tackle the inside wiring.

Just thinking out loud... :blah:

For serious rock crawling, a very heavy vehicle is going to be more susceptible to damage and breakage. I’ve seen heavy vehicles attempting to negotiate a rock crawling trail, they struggle and too frequently break down.

A vehicle set up for overlanding and long term boondocking is typically set up with extra survival and comfort equipment, adding lots of extra weight. But typically, those vehicles do not do serious rock crawling.

I understand why someone might want to build a purpose-equipped bigger and heavier vehicle that can do serious rock crawling, but overcoming gravity, high center of gravity, and the power requirement is going to stress the braking system, chassis, suspension, drivetrain, and engine.

A 1999 4Runner is nearly 1,000 lbs. heavier than a 1999 Tacoma. Half a ton is a lot of weight to be moving over big rocks.

Likewise, moving heavy vehicles over sand or mud also takes more horsepower, higher strength suspension and drivetrain.

It’s obviously a challenge to build a large heavier vehicle that is capable of trail running over big rocks and maintains a reasonable level of safety and reliability.

As I said before, I admire those that can do it… I could not. :shake:

The wheeling here in HI is way different from how the upper 49 states have. I’m from Oahu and our wheeling is more ruts and :pokinit:. Hill climbs and bouncing off tree is how we wheel here. The other islands, like Maui has a lot of Rock trails like the mainland. Mud, ruts, hills and trees is how Oahu does it. The truck that I built in WA was built with the intention of exploring. It did us good for 14 years. I did the SAS in October 2021 when my Wife said we were moving back home. I wheeled it 2 years since being back and I still have all my :pokinit: in the truck what’s making it heavy. Now that I just installed the 5 speed, the weight will follow.

Yes it is. Well I finished the wiring correctly like factory and I started it for the 1st time in 3 weeks. I still have to finish the exhaust and install the 2 shafts to make the truck drivable. It was loud as flopp when I started it(because it’s uncapped at the moment), all the neighbors came out to look what the hell was that load noise coming from .

This is from the FSM just to start the truck

This is how to convert your automatic wires to factory spec on a manual conversion using factory wires and plugs.

I finished the exhaust, but because it’s all pipe it’s loud as puck. I plan to take the whole truck down and add what ever it takes to make it sound quieter.

This past Monday as I was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine roared to 5k rpm. I thought I broke my rear shaft, but when I parked the truck to the side of the road and jumped out, all was intact. I put the truck in 4HI and drive into a parking lot. I then put it back in 2wd and drive forward, I then head a clunking noise. I was going to drive the truck home in 4HI and remove the rear shaft, but my friend advised me to get it towed. I prep the truck on stands and remove the tires. Tuesday I removed the axles and rear 3rd, to my surprise it was something totally different than what I thought was the problem. Keeping in mind my rear third broke 3 times since I’ve been back home wheeling and driving. #1: broke 3 teeth on the ring gear. #2/3: ring gear bolts came loose during the break in. #4: pinion gear gone from shifting 1st to 2nd.

#1

#2/3

#4

#4: Blue pen marks made if ring gear came loose.
None of the ring gear bolts came loose.

500 mile break in. I’m halfway through. I installed it this past Saturday afternoon. For some odd reason I shift smoother with the 5 speed.
