1979 Toyota Pickup - Good deal?
« on: Aug 13, 2019, 06:43:14 PM »
Hey all,

I'm looking at a 79 Toyota pickup with no dents no rust,
88,000 miles
22r 5 speed manual transmission,
4in lift ,
35in Mickey Thompson MP3 ,
locked front and rear,
12,000 pound Rough country winch led pods an bar

FOR $6000

Can anyone let me know if this is a good deal?
I'm new to these Toyota pickups and don't want to get screwed.

Thanks!

It is about right for the current market for a 1st gen depending in your area.

If the actual mileage is only 88k, and the rest is as little used at the engine, then it would be a very good deal.

Any pics?

A 79 didn't have a 22R or a 5 speed.
Be watchful of hackery.
hold this. . .

I can't seem to figure out how to attach a pic to my post, but it looks solid.
The seller did mention he swapped the engine for a 22R 5 speed.

It more than likely does not have 88000 miles.  the odometers don't have the extra digit like 82 and later odometers do.  I bet it is 288k,  388k...  For some reason folks have a hard time grasping that concept and insist it is always the original mileage.  Nobody is going to remove a 88k miles 20r to gain 5hp with a 22r..

That is a really good point Pat......

I guess the question is, if its does have 288k, or 388k is it still worth $6000 with the 22r?

Without someone seeing the details and inspecting it in person it is way to hard to say over the internet.  It could be a total basket case or a extremely well maintained truck.  What I can say is this,  the selling price of first gens has been going sky high lately.  I don't think you will be going wrong value wise if you plan on keeping it and it is a clean, solid truck.

Until you have 12 posts you can't post pictures directly to the forum's server, but you can link them using a free picture hosting site, or a screen capture site like VVCAP.

As Pat mentioned, the engine/trans swap wouldn't be an issue given the current market, nor would the chassis having 300k or more miles on it.

Your list of parts is pretty short. Are the diffs geared? Dual cases? Longfields or rcv's? High steer? What kind of lift?  I would be looking for a rust free rig with some nice parts for that price.

Also, the mileage rolls over at 100k on the first gens. If it says 88k I would assume 188k, maybe 288k. To me, the mileage on an old engine swapped truck doesnt mean much.

Seems decent, but in my area any first gen 4x4’s seem to be gold and people charge an arm and a leg for them.
