Trans stuck in gear
« on: Jun 04, 2019, 02:08:04 PM »
I have a W56 that I picked up that turns nice and smooth. I installed the shifter and it is in neutral but the trans is in gear. Can't get the shifter to do anything other than move around in the neutral position. Any idea what this could be or am I gonna have to tear it down?

One of the forks may have slipped into gear.  Yiu can either remove the rear half of the case and fix.  You can probably also figure out which gear, then remove the rail detent and shift through that hole.
hold this. . .

How certain are you that it is in neutral? Remove the shifter and look to make sure all 3 shift rods are in the correct position. If one of them is not the shifter can still flop around like it is in neutral but it will actually he engaged in a gear.

With the shifter removed the socket moves side to side, no forward or aft movement. Will tear into it this weekend and figure out where the problem is. Just hope it's something easy.

Ive seen a lot of these have the reverse fork slip back into gear when we ship them. Remove the reverse light switch and you can move the shift rod with a screw driver.  There is a flat spot and a ramped section in the shift rail right under that light sensor. If the flat spot is lined up with the sensor, your reverse fork slid back, if the ramp is lined up with the sensor you are good.
