I have a couple of questions that i am hoping someone on here can help me answer. Here are the basic details of the swap:
86 4Runner,
OEM 22re with auto trans.
Swapping in a G54 5spd/gear driven case from another 1st gen 4runner(I think it was an 87??)
My questions are as follows:
1. What needs to be done with the associated wiring for the auto trans? Can it be unpinned and removed from the harness completely, after the neutral switch is dealt with?
2. ECT module/controller box mounted in front of the shifter cutout. Can it be removed from the vehicle completely?

Mudder

You'll have to jump the neutral safety switch. You could unpin the other wired bit you would need to leave the safety switch wires and pull out the AT oil temp light from the cluster.

I understand the part about the neutral safety switch.
My questions are what to do with the remaining wiring and ECT controller? Can all that stuff be removed completely? Or will removing it cause the engine to not run at all ?

Mudder

When I did my swap I just left all of the wires still there as it was more work to open up the harness. But you could remove them as long as you left the reverse lights and 4wd light.

Thats what i want to hear. I already have the harness apart to repair some previous owner's "Repairs".. So removing trans wiring isnt a big deal. Im mainly concerned with the ECT computer/control module thing that is attached to the ECT button and is located on the transmission hump below the radio. Can it be removed ?

When you get done, the flex plate and hardware, converter and bellhousing are worth selling. I get asked about were to get them often. The trans is probably the A340h model that isn't really desirable. The new builds seem to favor the automatics.
