I've got an '81 Pickup, and i just bought an SR5 cluster from a '79. Not sure what to expect as far as ease of install. What do i need to do to hook up the Tach? Anyone who has done this, please let me know. Thanks.

Just plug it in and go!  It's all the same.
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

no, '79 and '80 models with upscale trim were called the "sport"(as far as 4x4s go, 2wds were available as SR5 because they had an available 5 speed).  this got you the tach in your main cluster, and the auxillary oil presure and voltmeter gauges in a nifty console add-on.

don't quote me, but i think '79 and 80 had a different style plug from '81, and most definitely different from '82-83 :shudder:

Hmmm, I bought the cluster off a guy on Pirate, who was parting out his '79....Basically its has the same thing as my '81 + the tach... I read somewhere that 79-81 had round plugs and 82-83 had square...I seem to be hearing a lot of different things, so i guess i should just dig in and see how it goes. Anyone know how to hook up the tach at least? I know you have to run a wire from the coil...but on the back of the cluster it just looks like a circuit panel with holes in it...lol. I guess i will see.

79-81 are the same from what i have done. attempted to put a 82-83 cluster in an 81...wasn't happening. as far as 79 sr5's go. i have seen 79 20r 4x4's with the full instrmentation.
Im an OG

my 79 is a tach dash rig.
but there was not an SR5 tag, i guess that deal above explains why huh.
hold this. . .

Hey YOguyDa,

I know its a location on the circular plug but I do not remember which one. Also my FSM for a '80 does not show which slot its at, it just shows the IG+ wire going to the tach.

I know its a black wire and I also remember that there are 3 black wires that all look the same..

But shouldn't your '79 harness already have a wire routed from your coil up to the cluster plug? Assuming Toyota was at least already planning on it, maybe in prototype stages, then all optional wires should already be routed.

I know Marlin put in a SR5 cluster in his '80 and I believe it was just a plug-n-go affair

Dont know about 79 but when I installed SR5 gauges into my 83 I had to re-pin the wiring in the plugs and run a tach wire to the back of the gauges. Heres the pin diagram for the swap in the tech-section

Well, the whole process was plug n play...But the tach doesnt work. It will jump up to whatever rpm i rev it to, and then fall back down and stay there. So, it seems to be reading extreme fluctuation in rpm for a second and then sitting at 0 for the rest of the time. Any ideas?
