37" MTR sidewall

While I'm checking out the forum, thought Id share my experience with my new MTRs.

Pretty short story really, replaced my 15 yo 35" pro comps with some 37×12.50r17 MTRs. Bought them from discount tire (like to deal locally and they price matched the competition).. Anyways.. the fun part..

They took the rocks with minimal rash/chucking, definitely grabbed better than my last tires, got me over a few obstacles with ease that was a struggle prior to.. then a little twig punctured the "kevlar" sidewall and it was blackhawk down.

That "twig" was most likely attached to a log.. just so happens that this is what broke off in the tire.. only saying that because it's happened to me..

No logs. We're talking southern California... it was just some cleared brush and I took the same exact line as 3 trucks in front of me.

Weird, I was driving through dried slash piles this summer when cutting wood & never had one issue with my 35's.

Went through three Goodyear MTR sidewalls within 500 miles of new, so I went to bias ply Iroks.  No more issues in 20,000 miles.

That was actually the tire that I picked the MTRs over lol.. read a lot of reviews about the iroks having paper thin sidewalls.. I felt like an idiot 😂

Tires are very difficult to compare because you're comparing a new MTR to an old Pro Comp (I don't think any of us can remember exactly how an old tire performed when new) and I believe that a 37 inch tire has the potential to outperform a 35 inch tire that is otherwise identical simply because of the larger radius.  This is my dilemma when trying to honestly quantify a comparison between the BFGs that I ran for almost ten years to my new Coopers.

I may have misworded it a bit. I wasn't necessarily comparing the two tires, that was just me sharing my experiences with the new tires that day.

My "review" would be that they did excellent on the rocks, not so much in a brush pile. 🍺

Once I have a trailer of my own and I stop driving the 4runner to work every now and then (just for fun).. I will upgrade to a bias pbr, irok, or maxxis. This time around was just for road friendly and good on trails.

It is true that the irok sidewall reviews I was speaking of are for the radial.

I was looking at the MT-R but there are a lot more people complaining about the sidewall of this tire compared to others. people seem to like them around this forum though. Maybe they do better on lighter trucks except yours obviously

More people complaining about the MTR's than others? Interesting, I haven't seen that many. I mainly see BFG KM2 and Goodyear Duratrac sidewall punctures. There are already reviews of the new Copper STT PRO with punctures too. It happens, and if it's a repeat issue for you get bias ply

I'm only running 35's, don't think the sidewall would be any different. But to get to some of the gold mine claims a buddy has, I run through a lot of manzanita. Never had a problem. Looking at pics, where you aired down.  Have you ever tried to pop a half filled balloon.just thinking

Never ran mine above 8 psi on the trail. That was their sweet spot.

Thats why I've run 8" rims. Poor man's beadlocks. Never lost a bead. Had them down to 6 psi.

I have run 8 psi with 35x12.50x15s on 10 inch wheels a few times without an issue though I normally stay closer to 10 psi unless I am struggling. I think you should be ok at 8 psi if you wheel smart.
