1988 Toyota 4Runner
« on: Nov 16, 2016, 05:11:49 PM »
Hi, I'm new to this site but you will soon learn that i'm not a mechanic but like to work on my own vehicles when possible. I don't want to write a book here so i'll try to make this as short as possible while providing enough information. I am in the process of working on a 1988 Toyota 4runner with the 22re engine. The vehicle had been sitting up for about 15 years before having the engine rebuilt so needless to say there was a lot of parts that had to be replaced. After installing the engine I replaced the fuel tank, fuel pump, filters, radiator, changed all fluids etc. so by the time I got the Toyota on the road the warranty on the engine had expired. About 1500 miles later the engine blew a head gasket. I'm not sure what caused this because it was running great up until this point. I replaced the head gasket and put everything back together and now the engine will not start. It will turn over and almost start but acts as though it isn't getting fuel. I am getting fuel to the cold start sensor but not sure where to check for fuel past that point. I was told to check the injectors to be sure they are firing by removing the distributor and rotating the rotor by hand while listening to the injectors. All 4 injectors were making a clicking sound so I guess they are opening and closing but not sure if fuel is present there. The spark plugs are also firing so it seems that the problem is in the fuel or maybe the timing. I've set the timing the way I was told but since have been told something differently. I placed the #1 piston at tdc on the compression stroke. ( I could feel the air coming out of the spark plug hole while the piston was rising) so that put the crank shaft timing mark almost on "0". I placed the cam shaft markings at 12:00, straight up. Placed the rotor toward the #1 plug wire. Is this the correct way to set the timing? I have since been told that the timing mark on a 22re should be on the "5" at the crank shaft instead of on "0". If this isn't the correct way to set the timing would someone please provide the correct procedure? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Timing mark at 0. Make sure the front 2 rockers are loose feeling otherwise you are 180* out & at #4. When the distributor is in the rotor should point at #1 on the distributor cap.

The way I have it now the front 2 rockers has about 1/16" slack on each. By #4 do you mean that if the rockers were not loose, then the rotor should be pointing toward #4 on the distributor cap?
