the screws go in BEHIND the bead of the tire to hold the bead against the rim,  not into the tire bead itself.

If done right, I don't see any problem with it. I actually that I'm gonna do that to a spare set of wagon wheels that I have. Seems easy enough. Not to mention a lot cheaper than the do it yourself kits.
