Oil weight for 22R
« on: Apr 01, 2005, 12:57:29 PM »
I've read and read posts and the FSM about oil.  I still don't know what the best oil selection would be for my truck.  I live in Colorado and the temps get as high as 100 degrees during the summer and low teens and sometimes single digits during the winter.  I've been used 10W-30 on the first oil change (only have had the truck 8 months and not a daily driver).  Can anybody suggest an oil for my truck?  Also, what's the capacity in quarts of the 22R?

Thanks
Aaron

I live in CT and I have always just run cheap 10W-30...no problems in the winter.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I run straight 30 weight, mostly just to help slow my oil leak.  It turnes over really slow in the cold weather, but it has always started on the first or second try.  The oil capacity of the 22RE is 4.5 quarts according to my Haynes Manual.

I run a 5w-30 or a 5w-40 myself.  The 5w will help on those cold days, it flows a little better cold than a 10w.  They cost the same.  So a good 5w-30 petroleum oil will be fine.  Has the same Viscosity on the high end but on the low end gives it more flow cold.  Pick your flavor, any name brand oil is fine.  Key being name brand like Mobil, Castrol, Shell, Chevron, Havoline etc.

When I fix my head gasket I gonna run Shell Rotella T full syn 5w-40.  $14 in a gallon jug at Walmart. It's a Heavy Duty oil with some great properties.  Usually used in Diesels but why should they get all the good stuff.  Seen lots of promising tests on real vehicles on the oil forums.

I have tried the more expensive synthetics in my toyota but have decided they are not worth it in that truck.  It's hard on oil being a turbo and a 4x4 (lots of idling) so I dump it early 3000 miles max, usually earlier.  I save the high dollar stuff for my other vehicles.

I run 20w-50 in my 81. I use High Milage Valvoline. It starts slow but I just let it warm up longer then most

 :talkingn: 22Rs dont have lifters

on REALLY cold days, if i hit the gas right after the engine starts, my oil pump sounds like a geardrive trying to slog the 15w40 that i use.  i'm gonna try out some amsoil 10w40 synthetic i think, but for a dino oil you can't beat 15w40 delo 400

i wouldn't run 0w40 or 5w30 or any really super thin viscosity in a 22R, they like the thicker stuff from my experience, and if you thought your valvetrain was noisy with 10w30, man you're in for a suprise!

Is it possible that a 40 or 50 weight oil could cause excessively low oil pressure?  Also, if your valvetrain is more noisy with heavier oil would that mean it is being subject to excessive wear?

i think a heavier oil will get you more oil pressure, especially if your engine has a lot of miles and the oil pump is worn.

Yeah?  I figured the pump may have a hard time moving a thick oil at a significant rate, resulting in lower pressure.  What about the valvetrain, could heavy oil be bad for that?

Pressure is resistance to flow.

I run 20w 50, and my motor starts fine in winter. But also my motor leaks pretty good, and the guy who I bought it from mickey moused it all the way.  only owned the truck since sept and still figurin out all the crap he jerry rigged!  great oil pressure  around 18-20 at hot idle and 70-80 at runnin speed.

I run castrol 10-40. Same stuff I ran in my volvo for 166k with no engine problems, and 300k on my benz.

ive used castrol 10-40w since day one in all my toyotas. 79 celica(218,000 miles), 87 4x4(123,000 miles), 90 2wd p/u(186,000 miles). i have sold the celica and 2wd p/u. they both ran strong the day i sold them. i live in mammoth lakes (elevation 8000 ft/ average snowfall 40 feet) and drive to los angeles fairly often. right through the middle of the mojave desert in the summer with a A/C on. have not had any problems. i just switched to the castrol high mileage oil the last change. also tried "restore" oil additive this time. seems to run a little smoother. its only been about 50 miles since the oil change. so i dont know if  "restore" works. but, i have a friend that swears on the stuff. he has over 300k on a el camino. so if he got that many miles on his V8, i should get 600k on my 4 cyl.
