Locker purchases
« on: Sep 21, 2015, 12:00:47 PM »
So I know this is not REALLY a toyota question it is offroad related. Where do you all suggest I purchase a locker in my Full width 44? Hopefully I will not beat the snot out of it till i can get a built 60 put in but for not, to get it on the trail it is what i am putting in. I am having a REALLY hard time finding a used one and I dont really want to pay $456+tax and shipping for a true trac

we are talking about the front axle right?

nothing wrong with a dana 44, you can beat the snot out of it and if built right it wont break easily, i got a narowwed 44 under my 91 ex cab and its taken trail abuse for years.

you dont want a true trac in the front, its worthless and the same as being open in the front pretty much, trust me i know, and the brake tap thing doesnt work when u have the other tire in the air lol

look into a ARB if u plan to keep the 44 or just leave it open if plan on ditching it soon my  :twocents:

Personally the only locker I will run in the front is an ARB. Non-selectable in the front have a tendency to lock the steering up at the wrong time. Tru-Traks are not a locker, they are a LSD (limited slip)

X2 on the selectible. And ARB is the way to go in the 44. It's what I have. And also X2 on the strength. I have beat mine pretty good under my 2nd Gen runner and it holds up just fine. With chromos and ctms it's a good combo. I would run 39" crawlers any day with my 44. It's all on how you drive bud   :beerchug:

Thats the problem is MOST of the time I am a "crawl it' type of guy but with this being my first "buggy" I am sure that my foot is going to get a little heavy especially with a healthy small block on tap

The math of that statement is as such: heavy Foot + small block on tap + first buggy = put at least a 60 in the front or you are just going to blow :pokinit: up. You will still probably blow :pokinit: up. Just less often

Don't forget what those Dana 44's came out of. A pickup or blazer or even suburban with either a small block or a big block. You can break it yes, but if you chromos and ctm or even long super joints. You will have better results. Yes tire size and pedal plays a role, but I think you will be just fine. If your a crawl it type of guy then crawl. Don't get crazy if your not prepared. And if you are that worried then get a 60. Don't waste your money on an axle you are already questioning the strength before even running it.

I have broken the long side shaft of the 60 front in my 4runner and I has a 22re. Personally I would go for a 60 especially if your going with a decent size tire and some hp/tq that a tree fiddy will give. Just my opinion.
