shift boots 1989 PU
« on: Sep 18, 2014, 08:24:49 PM »
I just bought a 1989 Toyota SR5 4WD pickup. After a little googling realized I needed to replace the shifter seats. Have those already from Marlin Crawler, however I didn't have enough forethought to realize I should probably replace the boots on the transmission as well. Preparing to order those. My question is: How do I get these on the shift levers without tearing the hell out of them? So far Google has failed me on this aspect. Thanks. - Kennard

You just need to unscrew the knobs then the new boots will slip right over.

Might as well look at them before you buy.

My 86 boots are still the originals.............

Thanks. The boot on the transmission on the transfer lever looks okay, but the one for the shift lever was destroyed. And like I thought, the only thing left of the shift seat is the metal ring on the bottom. I removed the shift knobs, but the part of the shifter you see in the cab is wider than the lower part and I was worried I'd ruin the new boots putting them on, I guess they have more stretch than I thought. I also noticed when taking it apart that there are two rubber dual boots that slide over both the shift levers and screw into the floor on the transmission tunnel. Is this normal? or should there only be one?

Yes completely normal. Put it together. Ad to put the shift handle boots on, it helps with a little grease.
