Locker install
« on: Apr 11, 2014, 12:10:30 PM »
Hello all

I have an 85 4runner and I plan on putting lockers in it starting with the rear  :eyebrow:. I don't have much experience with axles/diffs but I'm pretty mechanically savvy and have friends who know more than I do about the topic. Anyway, I'd just like to get some opinions on the following:

-I plan to go mechanical in the back.  Thoughts on yukon vs spartan vs detroit?  I wouldn't mind an air locker but that's a bit pricier and I figured I'd use one on the front if anything.

-What should I plan on replacing/doing other than installing the locker?  Axle shafts, bearings, seals?  I was told that the project would end up being a lot more expensive than just buying a locker due to all the other things I'd want to do along with it.

-I'm thinking of taking the pre-assembled locker-equipped diff route for time and headache purposes.  Extra money worth not having to do 'extra work'?

Thanks!!!

I ran a Lockrite in my 85 for several years and was pretty reliable on 35s, 5.29s and 4.7 t/c
The only real weak link is the stock carrier and cross pin.....mine broke after about 10 years of daily driving and wheeling and ruined the teeth on the drivers. Have since replaced it with another carrier and a Spartan (beefier and smoother)
If everything in your rear end is still in good shape then, the only additional expense would be RTV sealer, some brake fluid and gear oil....full case locker would require you to measure backlash before disassembly so that you could set it back upon assembly....you'd need a dial indicator then.
