I have taken my son once and he slept or was happy almost the entire day.  He even survived a broken Jeep.  Not bad for just over a year old.

My first rig was an 83 that i built. I traded it for an 85 runner just so i could fit my wife and kids. My son is five and hr has done ershim three times now and swamp once. It was so worth the trade. My wife is also getting the wheeling and camping itch so i get to share it with her.

I take them every time.  They have both wheeled since they could hold their heads up.  My older kid still passes out when we get in to really nasty stuff. It's like his comfort zone or something. That's why I have a 4Runner now...

My son started wheeling at 16 on the Rubicon Trail. My wife and I would camp at Loon Lake and walk the trail with the dogs on leash. Now he is off with his buddys. You kids could invite your folks too, right?

Sold my 85 pickup and bought a 90 SAS 4runner totals the family. Haven't been as much as I want in 2012, but every time we went I brought the wife and my 9 year old step daughter. Have a 22 month old son that has yet to go. The wife wants to wait till he's 4, but we might go to Colorado this summer so that will be his first trip.

Rocks For Brains has been in the Co-Pilot seat since he was 2 months old, yes 2 months. His 1st run was on Dishpan in the snow! I propped him in so he wouldn't bounce around, before that one of my daughters would usually go. Funny thing though it seems that I have become the Co-Pilot as of late and he drives.

I have taken my oldest boy (now just about 3) on the 'Con twice and his little bro (still under 1) once earlier this year.  Also, wheeled Slick Rock Trail with oldest last year, and we did a mini snow run with both guys a bit earlier this year.  I cannot wait to do more trips with them and my build plans now completely revolve around making it more comfortable, enjoyable, and safer for these guys.  I love my 4Runner and with the rear tire carrier, it feels as though we just about have enough room for short trips.  Earlier last year, we picked up an 80 series, which I am sloooooowly upgrading, for future family wheeling purposes.  Still on stock 32" tires, but I should have Marlin's 3:1 low gear set in by early Feb.

Hey RS, and the others with kids in 1st gen 4runners:  What was the setup you used for child seats?  I have not dug too deep into the rear seat area yet but just curious what you all ended up doing.

As is, the rear seats have no headrest (though I think they are just covered by the crappy cloth cover thing the PO did) and I would like something there for the passengers' safety.  Not so big when talking car seats since the kids are fully covered there, but after they are out of them it would be an issue.

I've looked into aftermarket seats some and also have a crazy idea that I could get a nice modern rear seat from some SUV and fab it in, but no clue how feasible that is.

I have seen the 2nd gen rear seats fit in with some minor fab work so that seems like a good option as well......and I like keeping it Toyota if possible.

Thanks in advance,

CB

I had my son with me at MCR12 and he loved it. Thinking about picking up an 81 longbed for him that I found local. He will be 16 in April and will be stoked to have a first gen to throw Marlin parts at

My two youngest kids have been wheeling with me since they were around 6 or so. They used to fit in the bench seat with my wife and I. It's funny as they grew, they squeezed mom and one of their siblings out. They're 16 and 17 now. They almost don't wheel anymore now. "The trails take too long and you guys stop and talk too much" they say. They both learned to drive on the trail though. My wife is my co-dog now, she even drives now too

I've got a buddy that I wheel with. I don't think that jeep has ever left his house without his son in it. He's about 9 now. Pretty handy with a wrench too.

Due to the snow in the mountains, RFB bailed and went snow boarding, I'm blaming him for the big time damage I did to my 4Runner at TDS!

Simple answer to the original question is not enough. I only have one spare seat and two kids so it is hard to get out wheeling. I need to find a 4runner to build.
