T100 Not Staying in 4wd
« on: Sep 25, 2015, 01:00:13 PM »
Hey - this is my first post here!

anyways, i have a 97 Toyota T100 5 speed 4wd and i cannot figure out this problem.
Every time i want to put the truck into 4 hi (does not do this on any other gear) the a.d.d. system works fine and im in 4wd - light is on and all.  then if i go to let off the gas or shift gears the 4wd lever itself moves out of place and goes between 2wd and 4 hi. it will stay if i hold the lever in place.

I've installed new shifter seats for the transmission and t case thinking maybe there was too much slop. it didn't help at all on the t case.

The truck is stock except for a 6" drop bracket lift that came with the truck.

I have checked to make sure that there is plenty of room around the lever itself - and there is - the body does not touch it.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong or things to check?

Thank you!

Problem Transfer jumps out of gear

Possible cause Transfer faulty

Disassemble and inspect transfer

Straight from the FSM, my fix to this was to have my passenger hold it in gear :gap:

Don't you just love those very detailed troubleshooting steps in the fsm? lol

Ive thought about having a bungee cord hooked under the seat and then attach the other end to the shifter haha.  :hammerhead:

Thanks for the reply twistedtoy.

I want to fix it, but if i gotta drop the transfer case i probably won't fix it until next spring. I've never worked on a tcase before either but im willing to dig into it myself if i can find a manual for it. while im there i suppose i should rebuild it or just verify everything else is correct in there.
