The 2 bolts you dont ever want to break...
« on: Apr 05, 2013, 03:18:34 PM »
Found out where a little oil leak I had was coming from today, under the mechanical fuel pump of my 22r. I go to remove the furthest back bolt and its not even tight, hmmm. So I pull it out, broke. Do a half a turn on the forward bolt.. snap!. F*$#!! So both my bolts that go into the head for the fuel pump are snapped off in the head. I drilled holes in them and am going to try an ez out next week. I'm guessing the threads in the head are stripped. So am I pretty much f'd if they are? Meaning the only way to fix this is a new head??

I'm wondering if you get the broken bolts out if Heli-coils would fix the problem???? Just a thought

Helicoils or timeserts would work just fine. There isn't much of a load on those bolts

Thanks guys.. so stupid question I'm sure, but how exactly do the heli-coils work? Am I going to need a smaller bolt than stock?

No a helicoil is made so you drill the hole out, tap it to a over size, then run the coil in and it resizes it to the original size. And yes it is strong
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

If you have trouble with the easy out, you can get it EDM removed.

Any size you want to run. Stock bolt it 8x1.25 or 10x1.25

Forgetg which it is....

Basically, you drill a hole larger than what you stripped. You then tap the hole with some other size. Then insert an insert with the correct new thread size. Then you have your stock sized hole with new threads

Look at the chart for the heli coils, It will say, what was the stock size, and then tell you what kit to get

I had the same issue a couple months back but my bolts didn't break, the holes were stripped and I was able to fix with a helicoil

Even though time-serts and heli-coils are easier I have filled the holes with JB Weld, drilled and re-taped the holes.

I perfer time-serts over heli-coils, I think they are stronger.

Time serts are stronger because of the material. They're also more desirable if the bolts will be taken out a lot.

Don't correctly the threads will be stronger than stock

Thanks for all the great info guys, so does anyone know the length of the bolts?  8x1.25 or 10x1.25?
